Terre Haute will join 10 Hoosier cities with a newly developed biohazard detection system designed to detect anthrax in the mail.
The city's main post office is one of 283 mail distribution sites nationwide that will have the anthrax equipment operating by November. Terre Haute's equipment will arrive Aug. 27 and begin operating Sept. 2, said Kim Yates, U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman.
... There have been no anthrax threats in Indiana or nationwide since 2001, however "it is good business to protect our employees and keep our customers safe," Yates said. "People need to feel comfortable in going out to the mailbox that what they have today is OK."
