Pentagon announces September 11 concert
The Pentagon would hold a massive march and country music concert to mark the fourth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said in an announcement tucked into an Iraq war briefing today.

"This year the Department of Defence will initiate an America Supports Your Freedom Walk," Rumsfeld said, adding that the march would remind people of "the sacrifices of this generation and of each previous generation".

The march will start at the Pentagon, where nearly 200 people died on September 11, 2001, and end at the National Mall with a show by country star Clint Black.

Word of the event startled some observers. "I've never heard of such a thing," said John Pike, who has been a defence analyst in Washington for 25 years and runs GlobalSecurity.org.

97. Maybe TOBY KEITH Put a BOOT UP THEIR (the brown Man's) ASS
Hey Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list,
And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist.
And the eagle will fly,
And there's gonna be Hell,
When you hear Mother Freedom start ringing her bell!
It's gonna feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you...
Brought to you courtesy of the Red, White and Blue!

Oh, Justice will be served and the battle will rage.
This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage
You'll be sorry that you messed with the US of A
'Cuz we'll put a boot in your ass
It's the American way

excessive, militaristic nationalism. The military people putting on the patriotic/nationalistic displays. Makes my skin crawl.

Wake up and smell the Fascism
In "Fascism Anyone?," Laurence Britt identifies 14 characteristics common to fascist regimes. His comparisons of Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, Suharto, and Pinochet yielded this list of 14 "identifying characteristics of fascism."

Download the informative trifold pamphlet of these 14 points in .pdf format here (right click, save target as)

1.) Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

12. These GOP's have no MORALS what's so ever. Scum of the Earth.
"We are at war," said Representative Pete King, (Republican, New York).

"It's essential that we support our troops."

He also said attacking Iraq was necessary after September 11.
(And why is that puke head)

"You do not defeat al-Qaeda until you stabilise the Middle East, and that's not possible as long as Saddam Hussein is in power."
(And what in Gods name did Saddam have to do with Al Qaeda??)

(Thats right Puke head) NOTHING!!!!!

(And thats what your seat will be like come 2006...) Nothing

More like occupied - by a DEMOCRAT.

13. Who stands to benefit from this.
Nothing is done by this administration without it benefitting a wealthy constituency.

Will there be a private security outfit a la Blackwater working the parade?

Will there be a terrorist plot detected and stopped?

Yeah, I'm cynical, but I'm curious to see why the hell they'd do this.

Now, unrelated info: The Redskins will be hosting the Chicago bears that afternoon. How over the top will week 1 of the NFL season be on 9/11?

14. Read the whole article, hilarious quotes
The news also reignited debate and anger over linking September 11 with the war in Iraq."That piece of it is disturbing since we all know now there was no connection," said Paul Rieckhoff, an Iraq veteran who heads Operation Truth, an anti-administration military booster.

Rieckhoff suggested the event was an ill-conceived publicity stunt."I think it's clear that their public opinion polls are in the toilet," he said.

Rumsfeld's march had some relatives of September 11 victims fuming. "How about telling Mr Rumsfeld to leave the memories of September 11 victims to the families?" said Monica Gabrielle, who lost her husband in the attacks.

Are they flailing or what? I'm sorry, even my teenager would know better than to have the Pentagon put this on.

161. But trust a repuke to come up with the most astonishingly bat-shit crazy
... quote of all:

Administration supporters insisted Rumsfeld was right to link Iraq and September 11, and hold the rally.

"We are at war," said Representative Pete King, (Republican, New York).

"It's essential that we support our troops."

He also said attacking Iraq was necessary after September 11.

"You do not defeat al-Qaeda until you stabilise the Middle East, and that's not possible as long as Saddam Hussein is in power."

170. I truly believe they do thank god for 9/11...
...it's made their fascist dreams come true! And it's certainly increased the Pentagon's budget.
After this obscenity of a walk/concert is over, someone should Photoshop the pictures of the 9/11 partiers next to those of the people in the mideast who really did celebrate on 9/11. The GOP is effectively doing the same thing, just four years later.
How would people feel if I had a party to celebrate the anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing? This 9/11 celebration is an obscenity.

They spend the half day they are at school doing patriotic things. Singing patriotic songs, forming flags on the field (each class is told what color shirt to wear that day).

Oh, you only have ONE flag on your lapel.

Oh, you only have TWO yellow ribbons on your SUV

Oh, your flagpole is only 30' high.

I work in a pod farm (cubicles as far as the eye can see). One day a flag popped up over the wall. Before they stayed in people's pods. Now they stand over people's pods. And that one has grown to 15-20.

Me? I have a "I do not consent to being searched" bumper sticker on my wall.

122. They need to celebrate because
before September 11, Bush's ratings were sinking. He got an immediate bump to the highest approval rating ever for any American President. He also got all kinds of ammunition to use against anyone who disagreed with him (with the old "unpatriotic" tag) and enough carryover to win(?) election 2004. Of course, he wants to celebrate. He's now a bona fide "war preznit".

30. A new thought. How far are we from having parades of weapons and troops?
How far are we from driving our own nuclear missles through downtown Washington with troops marching in step?

How far are we from making the public shows of power that we used to see from Nazis, Soviets, etc?

Are we going to have the military turn out in full dress and roll out the tanks and all of our weaponry. Why else would the Pentagon sponsor such a thing? It turns my stomach and I can't imagine how it will look to the rest of the world.

I hope they put the end to this farce.

36. Cynical view continues...
Now, how do you fund a military hardware parade?

Get the contractors to donate hardware, they get tax writeoffs, and free advertising.

They show off what's in the pipeline to scare the other countries around the world from mouthing off against what we want to do.

That would work, and would satisfy my earlier post wondering who would get free money out of this.

44. Tonight on "Tuesday Night Fights" on ESPN...
...we were treated to the essence of what you're describing. The bouts were held at Camp Pendleton as a "salute to America's heroes," and, during commercial breaks, the camera lovingly fetishized military weapons including a shot of a soldier sitting at an anti-aircraft gun. There is no mistaking the similarities to Nazi and Soviet uses of sports: rallying points for violent nationalism.

Fox has been doing this quite some time with its sport broadcasts; disgusting to see ESPN go down the same route. As Norman Mailer observed in 2003, "...the combination of the corporation, the military and the complete investiture of the flag with mass spectator sports has set up a pre-fascist atmosphere in America already."

68. My sentiments exactly
I like Teddy Atlas, probably the most intellectually honest figure in boxing. But ESPN's TNF/FNF shows specialize in parading soup cans. Maybe 10-15% of the bouts are interesting, pugilistically. The rest are mismatches arranged to pad prospects' records, like the sad final bout tonight in which Diaz got his one-punch TKO at the expense of a man with no defense (and now, possibly, eye trouble).

Adding propaganda to the mix is just about the last straw.

69. Yes, their leather-clad model...
I don't think it's a coincidence these people can't stop recycling representations of WWII, each more glorified than the last. From the History Channel to Hollywood to publishing to video games, it's all Hitler, all the time.

I suspect the glorification of WWII makes them feel inoculated against moral judgment; i.e., as a simplification, "we" beat Hitler, now we can do no wrong. And somewhere in that vainglory the most ruthlessly pragmatic among them have been cribbing notes from not only the Nazis but the Soviets. Nietzsche's warning seems to apply here:

If you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

49. Interesting that this propaganda is to be scored to country music...
...a form that began as an American catalog of the common people's pain, joy and aspirations, and, long ago, like the folk music out of which it grew, once set itself against the cruelties and deceptions of The Man.

The perversion of country music into twangy nationalistic palaver is one of the sadder signs of cultural rot. Not because the aesthetic is so beautiful (not to me, anyway), but because a language that spoke from the common heart has been turned into a mouth for power.

This is also a good time to be reminded: supporting the disastrously militaristic Kerry campaign shut down the antiwar movement, and as a consequence, this Pentagon grotesquerie arrives in a vacuum that could have been filled with popular anti-war dissent.

57. Well, I doubted the Pentagon would play Folk and Acid Jazz...
but souza marches and country (the country music that i think they'll play, aka. not the good stuff)... expected, but still pretty tacky.

a blues, folk, and country tribute (as in good country music -- sad that it needs that qualifier) would be quite nice. heavy metal and trance would've been a bit over the top, though i would have enjoyed it more. but it's more of a remembrance service than a party, so tactfulness dictates something more subdued.

but this current plan sounds... distasteful.

One additional note. Every year since September 11th attacks, Americans have commemorated that anniversary. This year the Department of Defense will initiate an America Supports You Freedom Walk. The walk will begin at the Pentagon and end at the National Mall. It will include many of the major monuments in Washington, D.C. reminding participants of the sacrifices of this generation and of each previous generation that has so successfully defended our freedoms. Freedom Walk participants will be invited to a special performance by country singer Clint Black. And more information about this event will be on the Department of Defense website, www.americasupportsyou.mil.

America doesn't support my freedom, I do. America is me...and you. "Amercia" isn't anything without us so how can "it" support anything?

How about "We support our freedom" or "American freedom march".

Under the phrase "America Supports Your Freedom Walk" it seems like America is some great corporation that is supporting us, rather than the other way around...oh that's right, it is a giant f.ing corporation now.

slaves holding it up.

And then one day, the slaves set down the burden and walk free
without a country band telling them they are free, they just walk
away and declare that freedom is their right.

And the pentagon shouts after them to remember the good times carrying
the big load, and how noble it was... claptrap.

I've lurked for a couple of years now and only now begun posting.

I agree with the post upthread. Country music was always about the common man and his struggles, some of Merle Haggard's songs during the Vietnam era notwithstanding. "Put a boot in your ass; it's the American Way"??? Only with these jingoistic neo-cons it is. :(

I wish with all my heart I could go to Crawford now or DC next month, but I'm a transplanted country girl in the desert southwest now and just can't afford the money or vacation time.

92. Why Clint Black?
I loved a lot of his earlier stuff, but the guy hasn't had a hit song in probably 5 years. Maybe this was why he was invited to perform:

"I RAQ AND ROLL"

Words and Music by Clint Black and Hayden Nicholas

YOU CAN WAVE YOUR SIGNS IN PROTEST
AGAINST AMERICA TAKING STANDS
THE STANDS AMERICA'S TAKEN
ARE THE REASON THAT YOU CAN

IF EVERYONE WOULD GO FOR PEACE
THERE'D BE NO NEED FOR WAR
BUT WE CAN'T IGNORE THE DEVIL
HE'LL KEEP COMING BACK FOR MORE

SOME SEE THIS IN BLACK AND WHITE
OTHERS ONLY GRAY
WE'RE NOT BEGGING FOR A FIGHT
NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY

WE HAVE THE RESOLUTION
THAT SHOULD PUT'EM ALL TO SHAME
BUT IT'S A DIFFERENT KIND OF DEADLINE
WHEN I'M CALLED IN THE GAME

CHORUS
I RAQ, I RACK'EM UP AND I ROLL
I'M BACK AND I'M A HIGH TECH GI JOE
I PRAY FOR PEACE, PREPARE FOR WAR
AND I NEVER WILL FORGET
THERE'S NO PRICE TOO HIGH FOR FREEDOM
SO BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU TREAD

THIS TERROR ISN'T MAN TO MAN
THEY CAN BE NO MORE THAN COWARDS
IF THEY WON'T SHOW US THEIR WEAPONS
WE MIGHT HAVE TO SHOW THEM OURS

IT MIGHT BE A SMART BOMB
THEY FIND STUPID PEOPLE TOO
AND IF YOU STAND WITH THE LIKES OF SADDAM
ONE JUST MIIGHT FIND YOU

CHORUS II
I ROCK, I RACK'EM UP AND I ROLL
I'M BACK AND I'M A HIGH TECH GI JOE
I'VE GOT INFRARED, I'VE GOT GPS AND I'VE GOT THAT GOOD OLD FASHIONED LEAD
THERE'S NO PRICE TOO HIGH FOR FREEDOM
SO BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU TREAD

BRIDGE
NOW YOU CAN COME ALONG
OR YOU CAN STAY BEHIND
OR YOU CAN GET OUT OF THE WAY
BUT OUR TROOPS TAKE OUT THE GARBAGE
FOR THE GOOD OLD U.S.A.

I ROCK, I RACK'EM UP AND I ROLL
IN THE USA
I ROCK, I RACK'EM UP AND I ROLL
I'M TALKIN' ABOUT THE USA

Obviously, this isn't about remembering the devastation 9/11.

from "team america, world police"

FREEDOM ISN'T FREE
What would you do?
If you were asked to
give up your dreams
for freedom? What
would you do? If
asked to make the
ultimate sacrifice?

Would you think about
all them people, who
gave up everything
THEY had? Would you
think about all them
war vets, and would
you start to feel
bad?

Chorus:
Freedom isn't free.
It costs folks like
you and me and if we
don't all chip in,
we'll never pay that
bill. Freedom isn't
free. No, there's a
hefty f@#king fee.
And if you don't
throw in your buck o'
five, who will?

What would you do if
someone told you to
fight for freedom?
Would you answer the
call or run away like
a little p@#$y? Cause
the only reason that
you're here is folks
died for you in the
past. So may now it's
your turn to die
kickin' some a$$.

Chorus

If you don't throw in
your buck o five...
Who will? Ho, buck
o' five.

Think of the all the groups that can have a place in this march - A group of women wearing veils and burkas symbolizing the wonderful freedom that Iraqi women will experience after the Iraqi constitution puts them back 100 years.

The far far right groups can march demanding we join religion and state, after all we fought a war for the right of Iraqis to do that, why can't we?

The oil company executives can lead the march with banners - Screw you environmentalists and peace activists, we win!

Homeland Security can be represented - "Remember, the War in Iraq has NOT MADE YOU SAFER, SO GIVE US MONEY"

Granted, I am not that creative, so come up with your own.

Let me guess: if you're between 18 and 35 and you register, the Walk ends for you at the recruiting station so you can head to I-raq and start directly supportin' some o' that freedom.

Y'know we did want the administration to take inspiration from the music and celebrity-filled "Keep the Vote Alive!" March and Rally. Y'know by, say, renewing expiring provisions of the Voting Rights Act.
Instead, they get inspired to throw their own music and celebrity-filled march and rally.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 9, 2005 - The Defense Department today announced the first "America Supports You Freedom Walk" to honor the victims of 9/11 and America's military personnel, as well as to celebrate freedom.

The Freedom Walk will begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 11 in the Pentagon South parking lot, near the site where the airliner crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11. The walk route will consist of a two-mile trek through Arlington National Cemetery, over the Potomac River, and will end by the reflecting pool on the National Mall, where a free concert featuring country music star Clint Black will take place.

"I am proud and honored to be part of the America Supports You Freedom Walk to honor the victims of 9/11 and to support our men and women in uniform," Black said.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld made the announcement today at the Pentagon.

"Every year since the Sept. 11 attacks, Americans have commemorated that anniversary. This year the Department of Defense will initiate an American Supports You Freedom Walk. The walk will begin at the Pentagon and end at the National Mall. It will include many of the major monuments in Washington, D.C., reminding participants of the sacrifices of this generation and of each previous generation that have so successfully defended our freedoms," Rumsfeld said.

190. parade or parody
Actually it all makes sense in bizarro Bushworld, where you can only fall upward! take for example:

George "slam dunk" Tenet <supposedly> presents Bush with deeply flawed intelligence...give that man the Presidential Medal of Freedom!

Halliburton egregious overcharges for materials among other abuses in its no-bid contract...renew those boys' contract, again without competitive biddin'!

Turn an 'itty bitty' occupation of Iraq, part of an alleged "war on terror," into one gigantic clusterf*ck of epic proportions that has actually inspired more radical extremists to arms...LET'S HAVE US A #$@%-IN' PARTY!

198. So...let me get this straight... we're celebrating a terrorist attack? Or
Are we celebrating that we are at war...and no one (basic joe on-the-street) seems to remember...or care?

Are we partying for victory? a close call? oops, we lost? What?

Cuz we shore haven't found Osama, WMD, or democracy in Iraq.

This is BIZARRE AND FOOLISH AND DECADENT... in oh so many ways.

Who the hell had his or her head up somebody's ass when pitching this plan?
And then... WHO THE HELL APPROVED IT? (if it was approved...which... I hope it was so we can all say... "I told you so -- armpits (cuz an asshole has a function)!"

204. They are celebrating the seizure of power of course.
Just and EXACTLY like the original nazis who celebrated their "Tag der Machtergreifung". I predict that 9/11 soon will be a national holiday more important than July 4th.

You know, they are already planning for next year when this "power seizure march" shall be held in EVERY city. You can read it up at that enlistment place.

A fellow DUer told me once (he's Buddhist) that he's convinced all the people in your administration are re-born Nazis. He was absolutely certain of it. I've been thinking about it for half a year now and, yes, I'm convinced of it, also. The dark force is back.

209. America Supports Your Freedom March
Howdy Partners:

Hey I've been watching these guys for a long time. They are having this march because:

1. I believe there is going to be an anti-war march in DC about the same time and they need to counter it.

2. Bush's Iraq-nam poll numbers are in the 60% negative range. They gotta rev up the rednecks with some sh..t..kickin' Fascism.

3. They have to show their numbers are bigger than our numbers and counter the Cindy Sheehan damage.

4. This smells more like the Nazi matron Hughes than Rove. Could be wrong.

Heil Bushler!!

Calamity
