U.S. Soldier Killed in East Afghanistan
August 10, 2005

KABUL, Afghanistan -- One U.S. service member was killed and another wounded in a bomb attack in eastern Afghanistan, the U.S. military said Wednesday.

The death was the fifth U.S. fatality in Afghanistan in a week and comes amid an upsurge in attacks by Taliban-led insurgents ahead of September legislative elections.

The latest attack happened Tuesday near the eastern city of Ghazni, where an American unit was conducting operations, the military said in a statement.

The two American troops hit were evacuated to the main U.S. base at Bagram, north of Kabul, where one of them died of his wounds shortly after arrival. The injured service member was in stable condition, the statement said.

We lost 5 US troops in Afghanistan THIS WEEK! I'm a news freak and I don't recall hearing anything about the other four. Out of sight, out of mind I suppose?

1. That "other" war
Though I supported it, it is not the smashing success that we have been told it was.

Certain people were more concerned about building natural gas pipelines than finding Osama bin Laden.

3. "Out of sight out of mind." That's exactly right!
If the media doesn't mention it then the public can pretend it isn't happening. Some media outlets I've contacted about this have went so far as to tell me the public isn't interested in hearing about it.

How's that for supporting our troops?

5. Militants kill Afghan woman 'spy'
Suspected Taleban militants have killed an Afghan woman they accused of spying for the Americans, officials say.

Gunmen shot the woman dead near her house on Tuesday night in southern Zabul Province. She has not been named.

Rebels have killed many men in a rising wave of intimidation, but this is the first time a woman has been targeted since the Taleban fell in 2001.

Meanwhile, a US soldier has died from wounds sustained in a bomb attack in central Afghanistan on Tuesday.
