Government drops New York Times subpoenas in Cuban militant case (Posada)

MIAMI (AP) -- The federal government has dropped subpoenas that sought notes from The New York Times and the writer of a series of articles the newspaper carried in 1998 about former CIA operative Luis Posada Carriles.

The attorney for the newspaper and writer Ann Bardach said Tuesday that U.S. Attorney R. Alexander Acosta had notified him that Homeland Security "will not seek to enforce" the subpoenas.

The subpoenas, issued in May, were sought for use in a current government investigation for the longtime Cuban militant.

"We're very pleased," said Tom Julin, who represented both The Times and Ann Bardach, who is now a visiting professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
