Gov. Bush Says Harris Is 'Good Candidate' For Senate

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Jeb Bush called U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris a "good candidate" for the U.S. Senate.

Nineteen months ago, she declined to run for an open Senate seat while President George W. Bush was on the ballot. Now, Harris is seeking to unseat incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson.

Gov. Bush had tried to recruit Florida House Speaker Allan Bense to run for the seat, but Bense announced last week that he wouldn't enter the race.

Harris is considered a favorite to win the nomination, even with an opponent. She has high name recognition, ability to raise money and hero status among Republican voters who believe she helped preserve President Bush's 537-vote victory when she oversaw five weeks of recounts as Florida secretary of state.
