Chertoff: Privacy fears not justified

By Thomas Frank, USA TODAY Wed Aug 10, 7:26 AM ET

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Tuesday that
Americans need to ease their concerns about turning over personal
information to the government - especially if they want to fly safe
from terrorism.

Chertoff said there is too much worry over a plan by the
Transportation Security Administration to collect passengers' full
names and birth dates before they board.

"The average American gives information up to get a CVS (drugstore
discount) card that is far more in-depth than TSA's going to be
looking at," Chertoff told reporters and editors at USA TODAY's
headquarters in McLean, Va. "But I actually make that case that giving
up a little bit more information protects privacy."

"Would you rather give up your address and date of birth to a secure
database and not be pulled aside and questioned," he said, "or would
you rather not give it up and have an increased likelihood that you're
going to be called out of line and someone's going to do a secondary
search of your bag and they're going to ask you a lot of personal
questions in the full view of everybody else?"

4. Some thoughts on this stupid arrogant a$$'s "argument"
1) CVS isn't screening me for security risks
2) DHS & TSA aren't trying to sell me cheap drugs
3) I can opt-out of CVS' plan, but can't opt-out of DHS & TSA's
4) I ALWAYS worry about it when the gov't wants to gather info on me. I worry about people who are okay with it.
5) I ALWAYS worry about it when someone tries to sell e something like this based on "if you aren't a terrorist why are you worried?"
6) The gov't has a long history of abusing private information
7) If they're asking me a lot of personal questions in front of everyone else I might have the opportunity to embarass them. If I give up my privacy because you think it's a good idea (when I don't) I can't make fun of you in public about it.

and finally

8)See my signature line for what I think about the privacy vs. security argument

6. If all passengers were strip-searched, would they STILL demand names?
I think I'm missing something. Passengers are required to run a gauntlet, walk through metal detectors, be subjected to baggage searches and (sometimes) frisking. Why the FUCK(!) do they also want to invade other areas of privacy? If no passenger can carry on a bomb or assault rifle, who the hell cares what their names are?

I'm getting really tired of the "trust me" (fallacious) argument coming from the most LYING, CRIMINAL regime in this country's history.

15. right
While the cargo is still not inspected like the passengers are. What about container ships? when are they going to check all those??

In my opinion we are far more vulnerable to an attack at the ports than on airplanes.

This is just conditioning people to no privacy ever. Soon you will have to wear a name badge or something all the time or be asked to surrender your papers just walking down the street.

26. You could have WMD-related programs in your head, remember!
And besides that, how are they going to know whether you're the Mike Smith who owes child support in Florida? How are they to know if you're the Mike Smith with all the creditors/IRS chasing after you? Indeed, how can they know whether this Mike Smith paid his dues to the present political team in power?

7. your either with the program
or your against the program.Last year a story about homeland security made the news,a man who went to the travel agency to buy cruise tickets for himself, wife and 2 kids.He paid for the 10 day vacation and went home.On the morning of departure the man,his wife and 2 kids ready for a voyage aboard the cruise ship...just one problem,it seems that this man 20 years earlier in life skipped out from 18 months of probation fro stealing a bike. The man created a new life for himself, good job, home, wife and 2 kids but alas, our Homeland security computers picked up this old warrant from another state and arrested this man at the airport...rather than call the guy up and inquire did you skip probation 20yrs ago,no they waited until he showed up at the airport wife and kids in hand, they cried as he was led off in handcuffs. He was returned to the state where he fled probation and went to jail....Homeland Security---its for the terrorists...shame on this fucking Bush Crime Family

9. We're with the government. We're only here to help.
And the check is in the mail.
And I promise I won't.......I'll leave it there.

This might be more effective if this administration hadn't lied every time it opened its collective goddamned mouth.

Here's hoping the Slashdot community is preparing to "Poindexter" this moron. He'll have nothing to worry about if we all know his home phone number, address, SSN, and credit card numbers.

11. I've quoted it once and I'll quote it again.
"Those who give up liberty for the sake of security deserve neither liberty nor security."
~ Ben Franklin

I'm frankly tired of having my privacy and the privacy of all our citizens violated.

We either live in America or we don't!

Yeah, right!

How long before they sell the info to the highest bidder? Or somebody breaks into it. Many people share names and birthdays.

Fuck him and this fucking administration.

or some politician uses it to intimidate the opposition (like how Bolton used NSA intercepts)?

Or before the database is hacked?

Or a dishonest employee steals it for a pile of cash?

28. See post #5 above. It's already been outsourced/offshored
YOUR information no longer belongs to YOU, it now belongs to the corporations. The Privacy Act of 1974 will be dismantled by the new SCOTUS and its newest member ...

17. ...ask you a lot of personal questions in the full view...
...ask you a lot of personal questions in the full view of everybody else?"

Why is that? So other people can follow you home? So you'll be intimidated, and give the "little bit" of information they request?

Sounds like a threat to me. It also sounds like something a bully would say.

..."Would you rather give up your address and date of birth and not be pulled aside and questioned", or... "that you're

search of your bag and they're going to ask you a lot of personal
questions in the full view of everybody else
"...

Nothing like humiliating people and using coercion in front of large groups. That'll build an endearing love for our government...

Love those choice of words. Reinhard Heydrich would have been proud.
