WASHINGTON - Pennsylvania Attorney General Mike Fisher, nominated for a federal judgeship, came under senators' sharp questioning yesterday for his appeal of a lawsuit that ultimately could be decided by the court he is seeking to join.
Fisher's hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is considering his nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, was "unprecedented," said Vermont Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, the ranking Democrat on the panel.
"Never before, to my knowledge, has a president nominated to a lifetime position on a federal circuit court, or this committee held a hearing on, a judicial nominee with an outstanding jury verdict naming him personally liable for civil-rights violations," said Leahy.
"I am troubled by the jury verdict."
