Democrats resist Florida straw poll
"The Democratic National Committee, trying to avert a contentious "straw poll" for presidential candidates at Florida's party convention, is calling on candidates to boycott the winter assembly if the party polls attendees....

...The DNC this week privately called on each of the presidential campaigns to align with DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe in opposing a Florida straw poll.

The national party has provided each of the campaigns with a letter to sign addressed to Florida's Maddox. The letter warns that if Florida holds a straw poll, the candidates will be unable to attend the party's December convention...."

Very interesting.

2. Yeah, they don't want to turn off Dean supporters
when they pick Kerry or one of the other more electable candidates.

4. Kerry electable?
Sorry but the good senator from Massachusetts is, IMO, among the most vulnerable to Rovian smear tactics. Married to an older woman who's heir to the Heinz fortune and, until the wedding, a key Republican donator. Supported the resolution giving Dubya authroity to invade Iraq. Many of this positions on key issues, such as health care, seem a little fuzzy to me(I did not think he came out well at all in the AARP candidate forum Wednesday night in DM, IA.) Long time Washington insider.

Nice guy but, no, not electable.

13. I heard the opposite
That the DNC didn't want the good result for Dean to get out.

By the way, your intense hatred of Dean really permeates everything you post. I could say some negative things about other candidates, but I hold back because I'm tired of all the harping and attacking at other peoples' candidates. (Except Joe Lieberman. He's fair game.)

6. I'm a delegate to the convention
I'd be upset if the candidates declined the invite to attend.

8. DNC has been squashing straw polls for at least six months now.
Got a letter from them last spring before the Wisconsin Dem Convention asking me not to participate in any straw poll so that the discussion can continue to be focused on issues rather than on the straw poll and its outcome.

Many apparently thought it seemed reasonable as out of 1200 attendees, only about 300 voted in the straw poll.

So arguments that this has something to do with protecting anyone are specious.

9. Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter got early boosts
"Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter got early boosts in their presidential bids when they won straw ballots at Florida's 1991 and 1975 Democratic convention...."

I am pretty sure Dean would not win this.... but I could be mistaken.
