Barr asks State of Georgia to Opt-out of MATRIX System
Calls MATRIX Privacy Threat to Georgians
Atlanta, GA – Former Congressman Bob Barr sent a letter Tuesday to Director William Hitchens, Head of the Georgia Office of Homeland Security urging him and the State of Georgia, to following both South Carolina and Oregon’s recent decision to not participate in the Multi-state Anti-Terrorism Information Exchange, MATRIX.
“The MATRIX program, funded by the federal government, through a private Florida company, is similar in concept, design and effect, to the now-discredited Total Information Awareness (TIA) program developed by DARPA at the Department of Defense. Congress recently reined in this program due to privacy and constitutional concerns. The MATRIX program appears to be an attempt by the Feds to do indirectly what it cannot do directly. There are currently 9 states participating.”
"Georgia has not been at the vanguard of states violating individual freedom, and I know that our leaders don't want to put us on that infamous list. Keeping the Matrix system out of Georgia will send a signal that our state supports a balanced approach to fighting crime and protecting freedom.”
Barr requested that Georgia join other states including California, Oregon, South Carolina, and Texas, in opting out of the controversial program. (snip/...)
