Bush gets first look at anti-war protest near ranch

By Patricia Wilson
Reuters
Friday, August 12, 2005; 1:16 PM

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush got his first look at an anti-war vigil near his ranch on Friday as his motorcade took him by the protest site lined with small white crosses representing fallen American soldiers in Iraq.

When Bush's black sport utility vehicle carried him past the site to a Republican fund-raiser, the protest leader, Cindy Sheehan, whose son was one of the nearly 1,850 U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq, held up a sign that said: "Why do you make time for donors and not for me?"

Other signs said: "Iraq is Arabic for Vietnam" and "Bring Them Home Now." Some protesters held up white crosses as well.

The protest vigil began last Saturday and is being led by Sheehan, who has been demanding a meeting with Bush to discuss her opposition to the Iraq war.

42. Ahhh, yesterday, he was going out of state but today he was just
going to a neighbor's place so that would have been really weird (and obvious) to take a helicopter.

Thanks.

104. I posted this earlier because I read that he took the helicopter, but...
anyway--he's not really "Free". For all the "freedom" he's trying to spread around the world, he really doesn't enjoy any himself. Can you imagine not being able to get in your car and just drive wherever you want to go? He's made so many enemies he'll never be really "safe" out in public any time soon. In a way it's kind of like his own little prison. How awful would it be to not be able to go anywhere without hours of logistical planning ahead of time? He has a lot in common with poor Martha Stewart. His own little "house arrest"!

During the 1996 election I lived in a very wealthy area--actually on the end of a very unbelievable street. We had fundraisers for Clinton and Dole on my street(!) and Bob Dole and Hilary Clinton attended these events. The secret service, etc. did the usual "arrangements", but you know what? Hilary was able to ride down my street, past my house waving with CLEAR glass limo windows (and my children and I stood out in my yard waving back with a big thumbs up!) At this time, the majority of my Republican neighbors had put-down signs in their yards and were in general not very hospitable because we weren't allowed to leave the street, etc. and these "rich" jerks (for lack of a better word hated their loss of authority). But you know what? Hilary came freely, we didn't need a third world military force to protect her and in the end, her husband WON!!!!! We also viewed the Bob Dole parade, although our participation was subdued and just respectful.

Unfortunately, Bush has made so many enemies he can't duplicate this experience. WOW, what a debacle!)

I talked to Terry last night to see if she wanted to go as well. I was looking for a good place to stay. Any recommendations? Walking distance is a must. I saw several expensive options...I might just have to dish out a few bucks.

56. I ended up going a different route
I am driving out there (taking the whole week off and visiting my sister in PA on my way back) so I needed a place where I could park my car without spending an extra $40 a night. I got a room at a hotel near National Airport, so there is Metro service nearby and a cab ride to the capitol is only $10. If you are flying, staying right in the capitol area may be a good idea if you can swing the $$$.

And check the DC 'state' forum for details on DU events - there is a meetup on Friday and a party on Saturday too.

:woohoo:

Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 12:57 PM by Rob H.
If the windows were tinted darkly enough, who knows what he was looking at? ("Uh-oh. Um, here Georgie, look at the sparkly ball! Look at it! Good Georgie!") The reporter is assuming too much.

Edited to add: even if he did look at them, he's probably so deluded into thinking of himself as an infallible "war president" that he just saw them and thought, "Why do they hate 'Murka?"

One monther is making * is hide behind tinted windows or under his desk. His approval ratings are in the toilet. A majority of the country thinks he's screwing up Iraq and thinks we shouldn't have gone in there in the first place.

It seems to be working rather well all told.

And one more point putz - he does owe the american people the truth on why he went to war. He is an elected representaive of the american people not their king.

He's 17 hands tall (as measured at the withers, that is to say the base of the mane where the neck meets the back).
That's 5'-8" for you non-horsie folks! Big. Real big. Big mover too! He's an approved Oldenburg stallion who was first shown in the jumpers and is now being trained for dressage.

here's a picture of him doing his jumping test at the Stallion Approvals at the Oldenburg Verband in Vechta, Germany:

and here's my filly (his daughter) Cotton (at 6 months and 3 months)

They are magic! Paints and mustangs are especially wonderful. There is an Appendix Paint yearling filly at the farm where Cotton lives. Paints are really unique and splashy! I like 'em! (smart too!)

My boss owns a mustang named Major. They are so special!

Do you show your horses, trail ride or keep them as pasture ornaments? Cotton is only 2 and I can't ride her until she's 4 (warm bloods mature later due to their size and breeding).

106. It's a term of endearment for a much beloved horse pet
who cannot breed or be bred or be ridden. It might happen through illness, injury or age. If you own a horse, especially a gelding, you might have to take care of a pasture ornament. Sometimes, they can babysit baby horses, keep another horse company or be used for a therapeutic riding program if the temperament is right. They can live from 18 to 50 + years. A horse is a long term commitment.

36. The arrogance of these pricks is overshadowed only
by their stupidity. A week ago there was one aggrieved woman on a mission. Chimp could have quietly invited her in, heard her out, and sent her on her way. Today there is press from around the world. Even the US corporate whores are represented.

His driving past her on the way to a big bucks luncheon sends absolutely the wrong message to ordinary Americans. "I don't give a shit about you and your protest. Get out of my way."

I think if there's one thing that unites ordinary Americans it's the feeling that they are routinely disrespected by those in positions of authority and power. It happens in school, on the job, at government offices like the DMV, and its happening in plain sight to Cindy Sheehan.

The longer this goes on, the worse it is for the chimp. Here's a guy on vacation for God's sake who won't take a few minutes to meet with a Gold Star Mother. If anything can wake up everyone but the most callous freeper, this is it.

is the maternal instinct and the bond between mother and child. Bush et al don't have a chance. Bush et al are clueless as to what they have stirred up (what with them being hatched reptiles and all). Somehow I think this will not be the vacation he envisioned.

87. Bush is trying to KILL all the powerful forces of nature...
All of them. Even Our Mother, Herself.

He's been clueless for so long. It's just that now more people are seeing him for how he really is. Even a great many of the kool-aid drinkers.

The man is sick down deep in his soul...what there is of it.

41. We got very close to Bu$h near SMU in November 2002.
He had to see us. He drove right by us. We were protesting the war in the rain and he was arriving at SMU for a campaign speech just before the mid-term elections. A couple of the protesters had tickets to the event in the SMU coliseum. They got in and actually managed to heckle Bu$h before getting kicked out. But then, we are talking about a man who just doesn't care. Millions protested around the world and Bu$h was not phased.

Would sure love to hear what comments he made to his suckup donors about Mrs. Sheehan. I doubt he could restrain himself from some nasty, sarcastic remark while surrounded by his adoring followers.

52. It'll probably be along the lines of his Press Club speech a few years ago
"Heh heh heh...no weapons of mass destruction here.....or here, either...."

That was when I realized the full extent of his tone-deafness. I knew he was a stupid, non-listening dunce, but that performance, and the sick looks on all too few faces in the audience, made me profoundly aware that he really does not give a strained shit about anyone but himself. He and his crowd just do not get it. But I think we are at long last getting to the tipping point--this feels to me alot like the days running up to when Vietnam finally blew up, when the silent majority started turning away from the White House lines and lies.

62. Bush Motorcade Passes War Protesters
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 02:53 PM by wicket
LINK

President Bush and his motorcade passed the growing camp of war protesters outside his ranch Friday without incident.

As Bush passed on his way to and from a political fundraiser, law enforcement blocked two intersecting roads where the demonstrators have camped out all week. Officers required the group to stand behind yellow tape, but no one was asked to leave.

The motorcade didn't stop.

Cindy Sheehan, the California mother who started the vigil along the road leading to Bush's ranch, held a sign that read: "Why do you make time for donors and not for me?"

It was unclear whether Bush, riding in a black Suburban with tinted windows, saw the demonstrators.

I respect his daddy for fighting in WWII, flying for the air corps. He got shot down over the Pacific Ocean and was rescued by a US Sub. I don't respect him for anything else but when it comes to balls, there is no comparison between father and son.

70. "got shot down" ..there's some controversy about the "shoot-down"
but over the years, HIS version has been readily accepted.. He IS the only one to make it out alive, since he left his two crewmen to burn up in the plane..

Don;t believe everything in the Bush-family history

That way he wouldn't even have to look at the protestors. He just fly off in the other direction.

We should all go down there - thousands and thousands of us. He wouldn't show up at such an unplanned rally but it might be kind of fun.

anyway--he's not really "Free".

Edit: During the 1996 election I lived in a very wealthy area--actually on the end of a very unbelievable street.

WOW, what a debacle!)

but didn't he do that once. Granted, she said he was rude and obnoxious (surprise), but why wasn't once enough. I mean, why would you want to have him spit on you again? If I were her, I do everything I could to undermine him, but I would never want to lay eyes on him again.

(Unless it were in a lonely unlit alley with no witnesses.)

88. Silent Bush drives past anti-war protesters
The Jackal slinks to his lair.

US President George W Bush has driven past protesters rallying around a mother whose soldier son was killed in Iraq but did not stop or invite her to talk with him as she has requested.

On his way to and from a political fundraiser near his Texas ranch, Mr Bush's motorcade sped past the roughly 50 demonstrators gathered behind Cindy Sheehan, who clutched a sign that read: "Why Do You Make Time for Donors And Not For Me?"

Ms Sheehan, who met the President one year ago after her son Casey was killed in Iraq, has drawn national attention since she camped out near Mr Bush's ranch last weekend and publicly sought another audience.

Some of the demonstrators yelled out "talk to Cindy" as the President's 15-vehicle motorcade drove past what has been dubbed 'Camp Casey', while others waved signs calling for the return of US troops deployed in Iraq.

Displaying open contempt for the mother of a dead soldier while on his way to a fundraiser. Only the most far-gone freeper would even attempt to justify it.

Hope it bites him in the ass bigtime as his ratings sink to the single digits.
