Senior Federal Prosecutors and F.B.I. Officials Fault Ashcroft Over Leak Inquiry
By DAVID JOHNSTON and ERIC LICHTBLAU

Published: October 16, 2003

ASHINGTON, Oct. 15 — Several senior criminal prosecutors at the Justice Department and top F.B.I. officials have privately criticized Attorney General John Ashcroft for failing to recuse himself or appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the leak of a C.I.A. operative's identity.

The criticism reflects the first sign of dissension in the department and the F.B.I. as the inquiry nears a critical phase. The attorney general must decide whether to convene a grand jury, which could compel White House officials to testify.

The criminal justice officials, who spoke on the condition that they not be identified, represent a cross section of experienced criminal prosecutors and include political supporters of Mr. Ashcroft at the department's headquarters here and at United States attorneys' offices around the country.

The officials said they feared Mr. Ashcroft could be damaged by continuing accusations that as an attorney general with a long career in Republican partisan politics, he could not credibly lead a criminal investigation that centered on the aides to a Republican president.

Oh we got a major rift in the government! :bounce:

1. Ashcroft will recuse himself...
when the pigs fly. This man has no sense of propriety or justice. You just can't talk sense to the power lusty and religiously insane. It's a bad combination and Asscrack epitomizes both pathological syndromes. :puke:

16. "I have no King except Jesus"
These were John Ashcroft's words at Bob Jones University. Does this tell us that only junior can impeach Mr. Ashcroft from this leak investigation? I believe so!

19. The career government people just keep turning up the heat on Bush.
This is developing beautifully and exactly as many DU posters have predicted. This also is developing very similarly to what Joe Wilson described at the townhall type meeting where he talked of Turd Blossom Rove being marched out in handcuffs.

23. Hmmm..........The carreer guys deserve applause , but ........
We need more drastic measures than a couple poke in the eyes.

I feel that they need to be more agressive. The DEMS (Kerry and Geptdhart)joining the Bush team doesn't help either!!!

25. Each day that goes by is a day that the Bush administration will
engage in additional criminal activity in an attempt to cover up the prior criminal activity. As the FBI gets closer to uncovering each criminal act, the pressure will build on some of the people in the administration to refuse to participate in the conspiracy any further and on others to try and cut a deal. That will give the FBI additional leverage to pry the criminals out of the White House one by one, with Andy Card being the last to go..

This isn't just going to go away. The CIA could have chosen not to leak the referral to the DOJ of this investigation but the decision was made to make sure the public was aware of the investigation. I think the CIA also could have leaked the identities of the people in the administration who revealed the information about Wilson's wife but chose not to. If that is correct, the CIA wants to see the Bush adminisration pay more of a price than one or two people marched out of the White House in handcuffs. I think the CIA has decided to protect its people, and their sources and contacts, by punishing the Bush administration for endangering them for political purposes and putting fear into future administrations to prevent them from doing the same thing.

24. These bastards have no problem lying straight faced to anyone
even when they know that the world knows thy're lying. They have no guilt and feel as if they are "on a mission from god."

They have learned that if they keep repeating the same lie over and over, the sheeple of America will not only loose interest, they will believe. The Bush admin feels bullet proof as opposed to Reagan's "teflon."

I hope to hell someone in this junta has a soul and REALLY starts leaking soon.
