Metro Mothers Take Stand Against Iraq War

DECATUR -- Her voice suddenly steadying, Mary Ann MacCombie took a very public stand Thursday against the war in Iraq that cost her son his life.

"It's too late for my son, but not for his best friend and thousands of other soldiers," said MacCombie, who was part of a procession of mothers that protested the war outside a veteran's hospital.

"It is time to answer the call and say no more pain, no more false leadership and no more war," said Patricia Roberts, whose son, Spc. Jamaal Rashard Addison, was killed in Iraq in March 2003.

Many in the crowd of 50 or so supporters held aloft signs proclaiming "I stand with Cindy Sheehan," the grieving mother camped outside President Bush's Crawford, Texas ranch whose 24-year-old son was killed last year in Sadr City.

Would be great if all the mother's of the fallen would camp out at their state capitols in solidarity with Cindy Sheehan.

The media will be looking under a lot of rocks to find parents of dead soldiers willing to savage Cindy publicly, while declaring their undying support for the boy-king. Some in her family have already trashed her. She's takes "front-line" to a whole new meaning. She's more like the "front-point". Cindy is in for a rough ride, and she appears to be up to the challenge. God bless her!

I felt sorry for her but was surprised that she felt that she and her family decided to do the positive thing and support the war and their son's decision to fight it. While I don't remember word for word, her message seemed to say that she avoids thinking (or dwelling) on her son's death and moves on.

How sad. I'd never be able to do that. One day that poor woman will wake up and realize that she lost her handsome son for a lie.

She skidded past her own possible feelings about the war, and opted for her her son's feelings about *. Of course, nothing was said about NO WMD lies, much less the Downing Street Memos.

When resisting the status quo, people want and need leaders. But in the absence of prominent political leadership (yes, I know you're trying, Dennis), the people can't look to Washington.

Surrounded by TV cameras and reporters, MacCombie blasted the U.S. involvement in Iraq in honor of her son, Sgt. Ryan Campbell, who was killed in April 2004 in a car bombing in south Iraq.

"It's too late for my son, but not for his best friend and thousands of other soldiers," said MacCombie, who was part of a procession of mothers that protested the war outside a veteran's hospital.

"It is time to answer the call and say no more pain, no more false leadership and no more war," said Patricia Roberts, whose son, Spc. Jamaal Rashard Addison, was killed in Iraq in March 2003.
