U.S. VP Cheney to tour Alberta oilsands

CALGARY (CP) — American Vice-President Dick Cheney is to jet into Alberta next month to tour the province's energy-rich oilsands, said Premier Ralph Klein.

Speaking at the premiers meeting in Banff Friday, Klein said U.S. President George W. Bush's right-hand man would arrive in September for a primer on the multibillion-dollar oilsands projects in northeastern Alberta.

"There's just a tremendous amount of interest now in seeking that secure and reliable supply of oil and gas — and of course they're looking to Canada and in particular Alberta," Klein said.

We regularly send a lot of Liberals (or NDP, the nominally socialist party) to the provincial legislature and/or the federal Parliament. Calgary is starting to come around a bit, although it has a long way to go. The rural areas are pretty hopeless, and due to gerrymandering they have political power all out of proportion to their numbers. Things are a bit more complex than most people think.

Way back, Toronto and Montreal both got bummed out after the feds decided to site our national capital at an obscure logging town in the middle of nowhere (Ottawa). And for the rest of the 19th century, the trend continued of picking places which weren't the biggest or most wealthy towns, but harder to find and easier to defend (such as Victoria, on Vancouver Island -- or Edmonton, which is quite far north of the border).

Even assuming that Georgie can find these places on the map, it'll take a while for him to get the troops up here (especially after we switch the road signs around on him).
