London Observer: US steps in to end Iraq deadlock

From the London Observer (Sunday supplement of The Guardian Unlimited)
Dated Sunday August 14

US steps in to end Iraq deadlock
Ethnic and religious groups still haggling over constitution - and a new name
By Rory Carroll in Baghdad

Iraq's leaders were locked in frantic haggling over a new constitution last night as the deadline for presenting a draft to parliament expired.

American diplomats offered their own proposed draft in a dramatic attempt to clinch a deal and avert a political crisis that would embarrass President George Bush.

Agreement should have been reached yesterday, but disputes over federalism and the role of Islam pitted the country's ethnic and religious groups in an eleventh-hour showdown. Parliament was supposed to have two days to scrutinise the text before tomorrow's deadline for approval but deputies waited in vain for negotiators to agree.

President Jalal Talabani said one would emerge today, giving parliament just enough time to keep a self-imposed deadline and pave the way for a referendum on the constitution in October and elections in December.

5. Well if they get involved it will only make matters worse and the
Iraqi government will be seen as a puppet by even more. Idiots by jumping in the middle it confirms what many Iraqis already believe and convinces even more that the Iraqi government is illegimate.

6. This is NOT Iraqi independence and freedom. It's US occupation.
The events will be based on another lie. This time bush will claim that the Iraqis have forged their own constitution but it will one imposed by the Bush administration just so the whore media in the US can report that "preogress is being made in Iraq." And that another milestone has been reached. But it will be yet another lie that will be followed by more killings of innocent Iraqis and our soldiers.

9. The Bush-Bots just guaranteed Civil War in Iraq
.
.
.

Many factions in Iraq will not recognize the Constitution as valid just for the single reason that the USSA had their fingers in it.

If I was an Iraqi, I would not accept any sort of "rule of law" that came down from Bush's gang

of course

That's what the PNACers want really

An organized peaceful Iraq would not suit their evil goals . . .

(sigh)
