Abramoff: More Trouble Ahead?

Arrested: Lobbyist Abramoff (right) faces fraud charges

Abramoff: More Trouble Ahead?

Aug. 22, 2005 issue -

(snip)

Abramoff's treatment contrasted with that given his co-defendant, Adam Kidan, who was allowed to show up in court on his own. A senior Justice official says one reason was that some of Abramoff's friends and former colleagues have moved to Israel. "There was concern he could relocate to another country," says the official, who asked not to be identified because the matter involves a pending case. Neal Sonnett, Abramoff's lawyer, called the Feds' tactics "mean-spirited," and says his client is fully ready to show up in court to refute the charges, which involve an allegedly phony $23 million wire transfer to buy a fleet of casino boats.

Another possible reason for the Feds' stance: to pressure Abramoff to cooperate in a broader, D.C.-based probe that could touch members of Congress and Bush administration officials. The probe centers on tens of millions in allegedly inflated lobbying fees Abramoff collected from Indian gaming tribes. But that's not all that's under scrutiny. A lawyer for another client, Tyco International, tells NEWSWEEK that it's turned over to Justice evidence alleging Abramoff defrauded it with a lobbying campaign against legislation to bar federal contracts to U.S. companies, like Tyco, headquartered in overseas tax havens. Tyco, based in Bermuda, paid $1.7 million to Abramoff's firm in 2003 and 2004—plus $1.5 million for a "grass roots" campaign to gin up opposition to the effort among Tyco's domestic suppliers. The Tyco official who hired Abramoff is the firm's general counsel, Tim Flanigan, a former White House lawyer nominated by President Bush for deputy attorney general. Tyco lawyer George Terwilliger says the firm "was a victim of a rip-off." Abramoff, he says, recommended the $1.5 million be paid to Grassroots Interactive, a group that allegedly did little work and later diverted funds for other purposes. Grassroots is "controlled" by Abramoff, says Nathan Lewin, a lawyer for Tyco's registered agent. Abramoff's former law firm has agreed "in principle" to repay the $1.5 million, says a source close to Tyco who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Abramoff, who raised more than $100,000 for Bush's re-election, allegedly told Flanigan he'd lobby White House aide Karl Rove on behalf of Tyco, says the source close to the company. Rove, whose secretary formerly worked for Abramoff, has "never spoken to about any of his clients," says a White House spokeswoman. An Abramoff spokesman and his former law firm declined to comment.

and that's not anti-Semitism.

If they were Hindu or Zoroastrian I'd feel the same way about their governmental policies.

Then you have to extradite a citizen. Nearly impossible.

On edit: But not totally impossible. Crazy Eddie Antar found that out.

14. Israel does not extradite Israeli citizens to the US.
If you have a parent born in Israel, as soon as you arrive, you're a citizen.

I think the hope is to stall these embarrassing revelations out to allow for a coordinated distraction in Iran.

12. Tim Flanigan, Tyco lawyer is Bush's choice for Deputy Atty General
So Tim Flanigan, Bush's choice to replace Deputy Atty General Comey, hired Abramoff to lobby against legislation that would bar firms like Tyco from operating with offshore tax havens. Now Tyco is crying about being defrauded by Abramoff.

Fortunately Congress has held up Flanigan's confirmation because of his ties to Abramoff. I wonder if Bush will continue to push for Flanigan now that Abramoff got indicted for fraud in the casino boat dealings.

So Flanigan set up Abramoff to get millions in fees from Tyco which Abramoff probably funnelled back to Bush and other Republicans. Part of the deal in paying Abramoff big bucks was that he would lobby Karl Rove on behalf of Tyco. Shouldn't have been too hard for him to get access since Rove's secretary formerly worked for Abramoff. Very fishy business. And Flanigan is right in the middle of it all.

13. Not sure why Isikoff did not name Rove's former secretary
Susan B. Ralston - who is certainly a most interesting player - not only in this story but also in the Plame investigation:

17. Anyone who believes that Rove has never spoken to Abramoff about...
...ANY of his clients....

Whew boy... where is the list? land in the desert? Brooklyn Bridge? ice to Eskimos? ground war in Asia (oh, duh...we're doing that, huh?)...

The stink --> who sleeps with the fishes?

And ... these are the folks who thought White Water was a scandal, precipitating a f***ing Impeachment.

Words fail me. Even my 3 year old grandson can connect these dots.

18. Any info on the "gangland-like murder" of Abramoff's casino boat partner?
I was listening to NPR Friday and there was mention of the "gangland-style" murder of the businessman who was selling or buying the casino boats involved in the phoney $23 million wire transfer. How convenient...

I haven't heard much more about this...anyone have more info?

Untangling a Lobbyist's Stake in a Casino Fleet
With Millions of Dollars Unaccounted for, Another Federal Investigation Targets Abramoff

By Susan Schmidt and James V. Grimaldi
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, May 1, 2005; Page A01

It was a gangland-style hit straight out of "Goodfellas."

A man in a BMW was driving down a quiet side street after an evening meeting at his Fort Lauderdale office when a car slowed to a stop in front of him. A second car boxed the BMW in from behind, then a dark Mustang appeared from the opposite direction. The Mustang's driver pulled alongside and pumped three hollow-point bullets into the BMW driver's chest.

The dead man was Konstantinos "Gus" Boulis, a volatile 51-year-old self-made millionaire, a Greek immigrant who had started as a dishwasher in Canada and ended up in Florida, where he built an empire of restaurants, hotels and cruise ships used for offshore casino gambling. Boulis's slaying, still unsolved four years later, reverberated all the way to Washington. Months earlier he had sold his fleet of casino ships to a partnership that included Republican superlobbyist Jack Abramoff.

22. Sounds less like "Goodfellas" and more like CIA tactics...Delay Mafia?
A standard Mafia hit typically does not involve the careful coordination (radio contact) of three cars, hollow-point bullets, and mid-day hit.

One has to wonder if this was the same "crew" that suicided the Enron corporate officer with supposed information on Delay's complicity in the Enron debacle?

Strange how these "exterminations" always seem to crop-up around Delay-related crimes...
