In a Reality Cook-Off, Winner Will Be First Chef
By MARIAN BURROS
Published: August 14, 2005

It is a reality cooking show with a very limited but influential audience.

More than six months since Laura Bush asked the executive chef to pick up his knives and leave the White House kitchen, she has interviewed a handful of candidates for the position but has yet to choose one. And because these are closed auditions with a few select guests at the tables, the search has become part of Washington's favorite parlor game: laying bets on the choice for a prominent job.

Since Walter Scheib III left in February, names have surfaced, disappeared and surfaced again as the White House staff, one of the city's best rumor mills, drops hints that change daily.

Two candidates, one from Texas and one already in the White House kitchen, seem to be on everyone's lists. But in the spirit of Judge John G. Roberts Jr., the Supreme Court nominee who appeared to come out of the blue, there are unmentioned chefs high on the White House list.

The best-known candidates, though, have obvious advantages. Chris Ward is the chef at Mercury Grill, a restaurant in Dallas that serves rack of veal as well as crabmeat enchiladas. A self-proclaimed conservative who supports the administration, Mr. Ward was summoned to the White House last month to prepare a second tasting for the Bushes....

10. Bushes hire first woman as White House head chef

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush, on a quest for the last six months to give White House menus a lighter, more American flair, has hired Philippine-born Cristeta Comerford as the mansion's new head chef, the first woman to hold the job.

After trying out a number of restaurant chefs and other candidates to replace former chef Walter Scheib, the White House settled on an insider in Comerford. She was promoted from assistant White House chef, a job she has held since 1995.

Ethnic and American cuisines are Comerford's specialties but she also knows the French classical cooking that her predecessor did well.

"She is able to do a wide array of dishes," said Susan Whitson, spokeswoman for the first lady. "In both their official dinners and personal menus, the president and the first lady are interested in healthy food with lots of fresh ingredients but that is also infused with a lot of flavor."

20. The "White House Chef" doesn't do a lot of cooking
The White House Chef is an administrator. She might do the entrees for big functions, but her main duties include managing the kitchen and its staff, planning menus around the five things the Shrub will eat, and ordering foodstuffs.

Assumedly not including pretzels.

18. Well, Pickles wanted a female Supreme Court nominee. George said,
"No" (or whoever made the decision on Roberts!). Pickles gets to pick the chef. Wow! I'll bet George always refers to her as "the cook", "the help", or "cookie". What news!
