Senior U.S. general says Muslims worship 'idol' (His God is the real God)
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N16184783.htm

WASHINGTON, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld declined on Thursday to criticize a senior Pentagon intelligence official who has told Christian gatherings that Muslims worship an "idol" and not "a real God," and instead praised the general's "outstanding" military record.

Army Lt. Gen. William Boykin, deputy undersecretary of defense for intelligence and war-fighting support, has used speeches at churches and prayer breakfasts to portray the U.S. battle with Islamic radicals as a fight with "Satan," saying they sought to destroy America "because we're a Christian nation."

NBC News broadcast videotapes of Boykin, an evangelical Christian, giving a number of speeches while wearing his military uniform at Christian functions around the country.

In one speech, Boykin recalled a Muslim fighter in Somalia who said U.S. forces would never get him because Allah would give him protection. "Well, you know what I knew, that my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God, and his was an idol," Boykin told his audience.

2. Wearing his military uniform??!?!
Isn't that inappropriate in so very many ways?

Do these jackasses need the positive PR so badly that they are going to refuse to dress down this asshole? Maybe they can call their lil series of wars and invasions a Crusade again...

Is it just me, or are the Bush regime (and their supporters) becomingly increasingly insane with evey day that they are left in power?

If nothing else, his church should lose its tax shelter since it's chosing to dabble in politics by having him speak in uniform. The IRS should kick ass (but of course they won't).

3. Is that why you see people praying to two sticks tied together
in a christian church, and Muslims have no images?

Sorry - this isn't meant as a slam on Christianity. I'm a Christian, and I've always felt the cross in the center of church leaned a little toward idolatry.

22. look on the BRIGHT SIDE

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life

Brian looks utterly depressed and in despair at this final desertion. Suddenly, a perky voice from the cross behind attempts to cheer him up.

Mr. Frisbee III (Eric Idle)
Cheer up, Brian. You know what they say.
Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best ...
And ...

(The music slides into the song)

blenden Sie jetzt gedanklich zum Song über

... always look on the bright side of life
(whistle)

Always look on the bright side of life ...
(whistle)

If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing,
When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.
And ... always look on the bright side of life ...
(whistle)

Come on.
(Others start to join in)

Always look on the bright side of life ...
(whistle)

51. Thanks, BP, now that damn tune is going to be stuck in my head
for the next three days. <hehe>

I can think of worse fates.

And for those of you who missed it the last time....

It was a time of great and exalting excitement. The country was up in arms, the war was on, in every breast burned the holy fire of patriotism; the drums were beating, the bands playing, the toy pistols popping, the bunched firecrackers hissing and spluttering; on every hand and far down the receding and fading spread of roofs and balconies a fluttering wilderness of flags flashed in the sun; daily the young volunteers marched down the wide avenue gay and fine in their new uniforms, the proud fathers and mothers and sisters and sweethearts cheering them with voices choked with happy emotion as they swung by; nightly the packed mass meetings listened, panting, to patriot oratory which stirred the deepest deeps of their hearts, and which they interrupted at briefest intervals with cyclones of applause, the tears running down their cheeks the while; in the churches the pastors preached devotion to flag and country, and invoked the God of Battles beseeching His aid in our good cause in outpourings of fervid eloquence which moved every listener. It was indeed a glad and gracious time, and the half dozen rash spirits that ventured to disapprove of the war and cast a doubt upon its righteousness straightway got such a stern and angry warning that for their personal safety's sake they quickly shrank out of sight and offended no more in that way.

Sunday morning came -- next day the battalions would leave for the front; the church was filled; the volunteers were there, their young faces alight with martial dreams -- visions of the stern advance, the gathering momentum, the rushing charge, the flashing sabers, the flight of the foe, the tumult, the enveloping smoke, the fierce pursuit, the surrender! Then home from the war, bronzed heroes, welcomed, adored, submerged in golden seas of glory! With the volunteers sat their dear ones, proud, happy, and envied by the neighbors and friends who had no sons and brothers to send forth to the field of honor, there to win for the flag, or, failing, die the noblest of noble deaths. The service proceeded; a war chapter from the Old Testament was read; the first prayer was said; it was followed by an organ burst that shook the building, and with one impulse the house rose, with glowing eyes and beating hearts, and poured out that tremendous invocation

*God the all-terrible! Thou who ordainest! Thunder thy clarion and lightning thy sword!*
Then came the "long" prayer. None could remember the like of it for passionate pleading and moving and beautiful language. The burden of its supplication was, that an ever-merciful and benignant Father of us all would watch over our noble young soldiers, and aid, comfort, and encourage them in their patriotic work; bless them, shield them in the day of battle and the hour of peril, bear them in His mighty hand, make them strong and confident, invincible in the bloody onset; help them to crush the foe, grant to them and to their flag and country imperishable honor and glory --

An aged stranger entered and moved with slow and noiseless step up the main aisle, his eyes fixed upon the minister, his long body clothed in a robe that reached to his feet, his head bare, his white hair descending in a frothy cataract to his shoulders, his seamy face unnaturally pale, pale even to ghastliness. With all eyes following him and wondering, he made his silent way; without pausing, he ascended to the preacher's side and stood there waiting. With shut lids the preacher, unconscious of his presence, continued with his moving prayer, and at last finished it with the words, uttered in fervent appeal, "Bless our arms, grant us the victory, O Lord our God, Father and Protector of our land and flag!"

The stranger touched his arm, motioned him to step aside -- which the startled minister did -- and took his place. During some moments he surveyed the spellbound audience with solemn eyes, in which burned an uncanny light; then in a deep voice he said:

"I come from the Throne -- bearing a message from Almighty God!" The words smote the house with a shock; if the stranger perceived it he gave no attention. "He has heard the prayer of His servant your shepherd, and will grant it if such shall be your desire after I, His messenger, shall have explained to you its import -- that is to say, its full import. For it is like unto many of the prayers of men, in that it asks for more than he who utters it is aware of -- except he pause and think.

"God's servant and yours has prayed his prayer. Has he paused and taken thought? Is it one prayer? No, it is two -- one uttered, the other not. Both have reached the ear of Him Who heareth all supplications, the spoken and the unspoken. Ponder this -- keep it in mind. If you would beseech a blessing upon yourself, beware! lest without intent you invoke a curse upon a neighbor at the same time. If you pray for the blessing of rain upon your crop which needs it, by that act you are possibly praying for a curse upon some neighbor's crop which may not need rain and can be injured by it.

"You have heard your servant's prayer -- the uttered part of it. I am commissioned of God to put into words the other part of it -- that part which the pastor -- and also you in your hearts -- fervently prayed silently. And ignorantly and unthinkingly? God grant that it was so! You heard these words: 'Grant us the victory, O Lord our God!' That is sufficient. the *whole* of the uttered prayer is compact into those pregnant words. Elaborations were not necessary. When you have prayed for victory you have prayed for many unmentioned results which follow victory--*must* follow it, cannot help but follow it. Upon the listening spirit of God fell also the unspoken part of the prayer. He commandeth me to put it into words. Listen!

"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle -- be Thou near them! With them -- in spirit -- we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it -- for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

(*After a pause.*) "Ye have prayed it; if ye still desire it, speak! The messenger of the Most High waits!"

It was believed afterward that the man was a lunatic, because there was no sense in what he said.

(Mark Twain: The unabridged War Prayer)

They just showed it on CBS news. They had video of him speaking to a mega church gathering. He was in full uniform. He was the commander of the unit that got ambushed in Somalia. The guy looks kind of old to be in the military. I think his career will be over soon.

14. What a moran. 'Allah' is the Arabic word for 'God'.
Arabic-speaking Christians and (yes!) Jews use the word 'Allah' to refer to "their" God. "Allah" is not a different God. It's the word for the same God in another language.

27. Of COURSE! RE: GEN. "BIGOT" BOYKIN!! , at the least, there are...
... there MUST BE at least 150 to 200 THOUSAND, or perhaps MANY MORE MUSLIMS(whether "Devout' Practitioners or more "in name" as is My Catholicism/Christianity) in THE US MIlitary Serving alongside, even perhaps having to, e.g., these GOOD MUSLIM MEN AND WOMEN in our Military, MIGHT have to SACRIFICE their lives to defend this BIGOTED SOB!! I was sepearted from Marines in 1981 AD, and there were more than a "Few" Muslim GI's, even then. I also KNEW many Too Many of the 243 US Marines Killed in Oct. 24th, 1983, Marine Barracks Bombing in Beirut, LEBANON(Super "Patriot"{?!} Ron Reagan's FOOLISH deploymentt of a SUPERPOWER as "Peacekeepers" in Lebanon, 1982-84!!)at the Hands of IRANIAN-LED, FUNDED OFFICERED HEZBOLLAH, yet I know that to be an ACT OF War, "fortunes' of War, whether the Act of Killing is done by A "Muslim<' or a "Christian," etcetera, it IS the HUMAN prediliction FOR WAR "Uber Alles," that IS the real ONGOING threat and problem.
And NOW, witness that IRAQ's OIL WELLS(READ, GW BUSH!!his SPOILED CHILD's LUSTING FOR THEM, for him to "play" with, no matter HOW Many INDIVIDUAL INNOCENT HUMAN LIFE, American, OR IRAQI, Christian or MUSLIM, etcetera, is TAKEN in this NEEDLESS and "LIE-FUELLED" process!!] OVERTAKE our REAL War against Al Queda, after the 09/11/2001 ATTACKS( that JUNIOR, our "Eleceted" Commander-In-Chief, HIMSELF DID ALLOW, did NOTHING ABOUT for hours and LONGER obn that most DREADFUL DATE!!), yet our WAR FOR IRAQI OIL IE "WMDS"{?!!} overtakes the Hunt for AL QUEDA(those that Undertook and DID 09/11/2001 Attacks against such SOFT, totally CIVILIAN Targets, well, THEY are NOT True "Muslims,:" at ALL to ME!! But They are "Al Queda," and NOT "Muslims," or "IRAQIS," or "AFGHANS," etcetera!! THIS "WAR" on Terror has spun WAY OUT OF Control, for these OIL-HUNGRY FIENDS, in their "Elected" White House!! GW BUSH-HIMSELF, IF he IS the "Christian" he attests to be, would SACK THIS "GENERAL" NOW, just as TRUMAN DID Genl. MacCarthur, during the KOREAN WAR!!), and, LASTLY After seeing 243 Plus of my former comrades in Marine Corps LIVES SQUANDERED, robbed from them, namely by REAGAN's MAD "Leadership," REAGAN then, "responds" to this By Selling TONS and TONS of Missiles, etcetera, to the IRANIAN Rev. MULLAHS, in the IRAN/CONTRA SCANDAL{ETCETERA!] in full VIOLATION OF the import/Export act, IE the TRADING with The ENEMY Act, "Colonel" Ollie NORTH even admits before Iran/Contra Committee, that HE DID INDEED, Invite, then TAKE SEVERAL IRANIAN REVOLUTIONARY GUARDS MEMBERS, on a FULL TOUR OF "Super PATRIOT"{?!} REAGAN's WHITE HOUSE, yet all Conservative "Commentators" and "Thinkers" TODAY vcan continue to REACH FOR THEN WHINE ABOUT(AND THESE "Patriotic" REPUBS WERE DOIN' this TRAITOURSLY in AUG. 1998, WHEN BILL CLINTON DID NEARLY HIT, KILL OFF SOB BIN LADEN WITH AIR STRIKES,just after AL QUEDA's Equally HORRIBLE Two African Embassy Bombings!)ALL they can whine about, is Bill "CLINTON and Monica" Lewinsky?! But yes, We DO have MANY, DUTIFULLY SERVING MUSLIM BELIEVERS, serving WELL< in Our US MIlitary-Today, who would ONLY feel totally INSULTED by this "GENERAL's," BOYKIN"s WORDS RE: Muslims!! GENERAL ABIZAID, the NEW CENT.COM Commander, should FIRE This "General" IMMEDIATELY, and TAP HIM for Half of his RETIREMENT PAY(GENL. BOYKIN's) Because, as I stated before, MUSLIM AMERICANS, COUNTLESS MUSLIM AMERICAN TAXPAYERS, do PAY BOTH Abizaid's, AND GENERAL "BIGOT" BOYKIN's SALARIES!!

About this general, wasn't there a thread this morning about him saying the enemy was Satan?

Again, I hear Gene Wilder's character from "The Frisco Kid"... "won't someone show this poor asshole the way out of town?"

Evidently, we are not getting angry young people to the terrorist recruiters fast enough, if brass in the Pentagone let this man keep opening his mouth while wearing his uniform. Yep, that sort of turth, justice and the American way ought to insure that we are fighting terrorist a very long time indeed.

Support the troops, make Boykin shut the f*** up.

Really. But to the "uber-christian" it doesn't matter. They have remade god in their own image. It doesn't surprise me, because fanatics with a very narrow focus tend to do those things. What I find disturbing is the fact that he was representing the military/our government. Guilty by association.

people who claim to be Monotheists start talking about "different" Gods.

"One" is admittedly a difficult metaphysical concept, but even this general should be able to figure out, if there is only ONE GOD, then everybody, Muslims, Hindus, Zoroasterians and Primitive Foot-Washing Baptists alike, are all worshipping the same God, albeit using different rituals and symbols to do so.

19. It's a very widespread view in the US, and it is, after all, a Crusade

I think the general's words, and the secretary of defense's tacit approval will be reassuring to the majority of US voters, who have been getting some mixed messages to a certain extent from the bush regime.

Since most don't really pay much attention to what their tax money is paying to have done to Muslims in various countries around the world, and for some reason somebody in the writer's department got the regime to sign off on having bush mouth some platitudes about Islam a couple of times, of course they have stopped that now, and sort of eased on into it, what with Lou Dobbs and ilk carefully adding some adjective or other, I think Lou's is "radical Islamists."

(A little known fact: The word "Islamist" refers to someone who studies Islam and its history, so a "radical Islamist" could actually be a ponytailed Birkenstock-wearing unreconstructed Trotskyite of any or no religious faith.)

Anyway, as soon as they will cut the crap and just come out and call it a Crusade and pump up the pagan idol-worshipper rhetoric, have it come out of increasingly official mouths, maybe even write some spew and put it on the .gov sites, make it available through the US printing office, it just might help people around the world get it together and liberate America.

One would wish, naturally, that America would liberate itself, but that is even less likely than a political solution to the domestic class war.

34. Exactly...
actually, I feel sorry for this man. He strikes me as someone who is psychologially unhealthy. To state that the Islamic God is not the God of the Jews or the God of Christians is to deny a very simple, easily demonstrable fact, as easy as confirming that 2 + 2 = 4. Whatever one's feelings are toward a given belief system, to believe something that is so readily proven false is the same as if I walked around believing I'm Napoleon. Can people really be so driven by the prejudices and blind hate that their fantasy simply becomes reality?

39. Really?
I know they preach hatred of Islam, but I didn't think they had ever denied that Islam also referred to the God of Abraham. For them to say that this is a different God would necessarily imply that Abraham was a polytheist, which is an odd claim to make about the patriarch of a monotheistic religion.

75. Not total crap at all.
Intelligent, informed people will agree that Muslims, Jews and Christians worship the same God but rabid ideologues will and DO spout that Allah is an evil entity, a pagan god.

Trust me on this one, I spent 1 year arguing Israel/Palestine on the Yahoo story boards and heard that for a year straight from the pro-Likud Jews and fundamentalist Christians.

How many websites of pure swill would you like? There are literally thousands of them out there.

48. The '700 Club' Position Rests Largely On Three Planks
First, that Muhammed was not addressed by an angel but possessed by a demon: therefore his revelation, and the religion and worship following from it, is a Satanic counterfeit.

Second, that worship is actually directed at the old idol-stone called the kaaba, which actually was once viewed as a diety in and of itself, as meteoric stones were throughout the Near East long ago.

Third, that since the divinity of Christ is the touchstone for worship of the Abrahamic deity, and Islam denies this, viewing Christ as a man only, albiet a prophet and blameless, the diety worshipped by it cannot possibly be the same as Christians worship.

Jews escape this last by a sort of grandfather clause: they are deludedly clinging to an early revelation they do not fully understand, but since Islam came after Christ, it can only be wholly erroneous.

37. To clarify...
Ignorance is one thing; if you don't know something, you don't know something. But I would assume that if one were going to run around beating one's chest and giving speeches, one would take the five seconds to fact check the single point that one is basing one's argument on, right?

Do I give people too much credit?

47. It is a symptom of mental illness
It is called concrete thought when symbols of symbolic meaning are mistaken for the abstract beliefs they represent. When accompanied by a Manichean outlook in which the observer and his kind are all good and those outside the favored group are "evil," and mundane political characters are assigned metaphysical significance a delusional system of projections is created which is analogous to psychosis. In the fundamentalist killer weltanschuang, ideas of reference are attached even to empirical occurences which enhance the delusional notions of participants including the false perception that they are empowered socially by their defective and irrational belief system.

Concrete thought and spiritual faith have little in common and are distinguished usually by the degree of sophistication of the believer. When religion of the former nature becomes politics, the hero worship phase of totalitarian government is being ushered in. Government as spiritual mentor, leader as god complete with a pantheon of lesser divinities.

69. His comments are also a violation of Regs
...pertaining to equal opportunity in the defense department. Making statements ridiculing religious beliefs and making derogatory remarks about a particular ethnic or religious group is a violation of federal regulations when done by a federal official. Making remarks promoting one set of religious beliefs over another shouldn't be done in the defense department either. He should be fired.

This practice has been going on in the Army every day since the late eighties.

Sorry about my post, it is not well written. I also read on these boards that Boykin was involved in the raid to "save" the American embassy hostages in Iran. No wonder that failed.

70. The general's "outstanding" military record

"Boykin took part in the failed mission by the Army's elite Delta Force to rescue American hostages in Iran in 1980, searched for Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar in 1992, commanded the 1993 raid in Somalia in which U.S. troops were ambushed in Mogadishu and commanded Army Special Forces."

I think we can add to his "outstanding" record 9/11 as well. There is a lot of mess around - just like in Iran in 1980 or in Mogadishu in 1993.

God thinks you're a waste of flesh
God prefers an atheist
Oh God, God...
God thinks all people like you are hateful
God thinks all people like you are an embarrassment to creation
Self-righteous, judgmental
First to throw a stone
And you're using his name for your own protection
