WASHINGTON — The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee urged an abortion rights group Thursday to pull a controversial TV spot charging that Supreme Court nominee John Roberts sided with violent fringe groups and a bomber of abortion clinics in legal proceedings.
The 30-second spot sponsored by NARAL Pro-Choice America has fueled a firestorm as the Senate prepares for Robert's confirmation hearing after Labor Day.
The "television advertisement is blatantly untrue and unfair," wrote Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., in a letter to the group's president, Nancy Keenan. "I write to urge NARAL Pro-Choice America to cancel the 30-second television spot which unfairly attacks" the nominee.
Specter specifically objected to the ad's "assertions" that Roberts filed Supreme Court briefs "supporting violent fringe groups and a convicted clinic bomber" and that "America can't afford a justice whose ideology leads him to excuse violence against other Americans."
