Tests indicate seized chemicals could have been used for explosives, military says

By Antonio Castaneda
ASSOCIATED PRESS

3:49 p.m. August 14, 2005

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Early tests of chemicals seized at a suspected insurgent hideout in northern Iraq indicate they included substances that could be used in explosives, the U.S. military said Sunday.
About 1,500 gallons of various chemicals were found in what the military called an insurgent chemical production facility in Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad.

Col. Henry Franke, a nuclear, biological, and chemical defense officer, said chemical samples indicate that the facility could have been used to produce explosives, and that it appeared to be associated with insurgents. However, he said no explosives – only their components – were found.

Chemical samples have been sent to the United States for further tests, Franke said. The military did not say when the tests – which will determine the exact chemicals found, among other things – are expected to be complete.

1. Officials also noted...
That the chemical, known as baking soda, could be combined with vinegar to power small plastic submarines.

The combination has also been used with red food coloring to form deadly volcanoes.

2. Anyone who has seen the photos of this "find" knows...
...it is a deteriorating mess that looks as if it hadn't seen the light of day in decades. Of course, with the help of the complicit media, Bush may get some mileage out of it.

4. Iraq's heavy industry was overwhelmingly chemicals.
That's easy to find stuff in CIA factbooks. Which obviously no one at OSP has read.

6. Something new
to keep our minds off Grand Juries, new CIA books saying we could have caught OBL in Bora Bora and the possibility that a high ranking military official was demoted, possibly for planning a coup. Bush probably drank or inhaled most of those chemicals a few years ago.

7. Like there is a shortage of explosives there!
Hello numnuts, you let them steal how many tons of the good stuff? Why would they have to make inferior explosives when they have several tons of primo RBX?

10. But we are supposed to shout 'hallalujah' that they found
this outdated site and forget the fact that they forgot to guard the tons of stuff that disappeared.

11. Mark my words:
6 months down the road, after they have extracted the last little bit of
PR mileage out of this, they will announce that it was a water treatment plant or something like that.

13. gimme a break, running an IR and GC/MS takes minutes/sample
Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 09:17 PM by kodi
the tests could be run at any decently equipped university chemistry dept lab in the world.

1.500 gallons is what you can put on to 7-8 pallets. its nearly nothing.

And atoms are known to be the building blocks of all explosives, including atomic bombs.
