Wiccan Wants Town to Pay Her Legal Bills

Monday August 15, 2005 5:01 AM

GREAT FALLS, S.C. (AP) - A small South Carolina town is facing a hefty legal bill after losing a battle over whether it should stop using Jesus Christ's name in prayers before council meetings.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused in June to hear the town's appeal of a lower court ruling over the prayers.

Now Darla Wynne wants Great Falls to pay her more than $65,000 to cover legal bills. A judge is expected to rule on the matter within the next two months.

Wynne, who describes herself as a Wiccan priestess, sued Great Falls in 2001, saying the town violated the separation between church and state by using the name Jesus Christ in prayers because it promoted one religion over the other.

Self-righteousness knows few bounds, as far as I've ever seen

And done other wonderful, Christian-in-name-only stuff to her and her home...

13. Reading the account of her companions being killed, it seems to me
that she can't be much of a wiccan...most witchy folk I've ever known are at least as protective of their animal friends as of themselves, and would have taken them all to safety thirty seconds after the first attack on them. Or is wicca different in that regard? She says the creeps couldn't pry her loose from the town now, but her companions had no say in that decision, they merely died from it. :(

17. I blame her for not taking them to safety, yes, you betcha.
Who would do it, if not she? Or do you find it okay for them to be sacrificed to her political principles?

14. I know someone
who had their house burned down. The old "Salem" mentality still exists here and there.
Severely repressed imaginations can go off the deep end.

4. Saw a cop today...
Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 11:36 PM by phusion
With a large license plate in his squad car's back window that said:

"One nation under GOD" with "GOD" in red, white and blue.

The cops are apparently Christian uber-patriots around here...

15. they should pay her legal bills. what jerks.
hello--south carolina. separation of church & state. that includes you.

and the town should vote the freaks out of city council offices--look at the bill they ran up for "their" side, and if they have to pay her bill as well--it's those residents that should be screaming at the "village people"

as for this woman who took them to court--good for her, i'm glad she did it. i admire her courage while concerned for her safety.
