Fuel terror plot report played down

15 August 2005

A report of a possible plot to launch a third terror strike on Britain by targeting petrol stations has been played down by officials.

At the weekend, security chiefs in the United States warned that terrorists may be planning to hijack fuel tankers and drive them into petrol stations.

According to The Times, sources at US Department of Homeland Security revealed that the plan was to strike in the next month in Britain, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

The Department's report states: "Al Qaida leaders plan to employ various types of fuel trucks as vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices in an effort to cause mass casualties... The stated goal is the collapse of the US economy."

1. Now there's a way to cut fuel use
Being afraid to fill up could really take a big bite out of driving.

2. I see this as an excuse for tripling gas prices already
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 11:18 AM by jsamuel
this way they can blame it on "terrorists" instead of their own incompetence and the oil companies...

3. Mass casualties at the gas stations?
Are they going to run over and change the price to $1.99 and get a backup of traffic or something?

4. Based on Iraq?
This was a tactic used by a suicide bomber in Iraq in, I think, June.

I wonder if certain other media are going to correct themselves.

This article says "sometime in the next month".

Some other papers said there would be a lovely "anniversary strike".

As if terrorists are that cliche - they love feeling like they're putting one over everyone.

7. Funny how they never predict the real terrorist events.
Just the ones that bubble up from urban legend.
