Four men charged with the hazing death of student Matthew William Carrington could face possible life terms, should a California judge conclude that their actions constituted torture.

Carrington, 21, died February 2 after drinking large amounts of water and doing exercises in the cold basement of the Chi Tau house, about five blocks from California State University's Chico campus, all as part of a "hell week" initiation ritual, according to The Associated Press. Carrington died of heart failure brought on by water intoxication. <snip>
