rs after the black maid was put to death for killing a white man she
claimed held her in slavery and threatened her life.

The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles has decided to pardon Lena
Baker and plans to present a proclamation to her descendants at its
Aug. 30 meeting in Atlanta, board spokeswoman Scheree Lipscomb said
Monday.

The board did not find Baker innocent of the crime, Lipscomb said.
Members instead found the decision to deny her clemency in 1945 "was
a grievous error, as this case called out for mercy," Lipscomb said.

Baker was sentenced to die following a one-day trial before an
all-white, all-male jury in Georgia.

During her brief trial, Baker testified that E.B. Knight, a man she
had been hired to care for, held her against her will in a grist mill
and threatened to shoot her if she tried to leave. She said she
grabbed Knight's gun and shot him when he raised a metal bar to
strike her.

1. I see...
And do they plan to glue the pardon to her tombstone or (ghoulish thought) do they plan to dig her up and put it in the casket with her?

11. Pardon set for woman executed in Georgia
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8963656/

ALBANY, Ga. - The only woman ever executed in Georgia’s electric chair is being granted a posthumous pardon, 60 years after the black maid was put to death for killing a white man she claimed held her in slavery and threatened her life.

12. I guess that's something, but it seems too little, too late.
I wonder if it will take 60 years to get a verifiable paper ballot from the black box voter screens in Georgia. I fear that it's already too late for that.

15. That's good. And in true Southern code I say, "Bless his heart."
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 02:17 AM by countmyvote4real
You know it, but for other readers it translates as "What a fucking moron."

NOTE to outsiders: The translated intent doesn't require the ramped-up explicative. That's a private understanding determined by the sensibilities of those within ear reach of the remark. Bottom line, you're discussing a total idiot.

“Bless X heart” could also be cross-referenced under “cross to bare.” This invokes the long suffering, noble and insurmountable goals of a Christian martyr (in particular), but can be shared by almost any cult, sect, political party, (whatever.) In my case, that would refer to my ignorant, but ever so evangelical immediate family in Georgia.

Used in a sentence together? You can’t. “Bless X heart is best as a stand alone.

When I saw the Bush/Cheney bumper sticker on my brother’s car I had to bless his heart because I immediately knew that he would be my cross to bare. Bless his heart.

vs.

When I saw the Confederate flag displayed on the front lawn of my parents’ home I knew that somebody had a cross to bare. (They live in Georgia where this was an issue a few years ago.) Bless their (stupid, misguided) hearts.

Oddly enough, I’m sure that I could convince them to hang a gay rainbow flag based on the colors alone. Perhaps if verfified vorter paper trail iinvoled some colors.... What else can I say but, “Bless their hearts.”

17. If you want to hear some BS "Orwellian code words" you should check
this out. It was on NPR's Talk of the Nation today, and this guy completely "Sugar Coated" the Facts of the case.

Note to John Cole Vodicka: The Word is "RAPE" and "Violent Sexual Attack."

14. "Grievous error"...
Gee, error seems so harsh for state sanctioned murder of an abused woman. :sarcasm: :puke:
