Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano declared an emergency Monday in four border counties because of problems related to lax border enforcement and moved to provide local governments in those counties with up to $1.5 million in state funding.

Napolitano's order directly released $200,000 from the state's emergency fund for disasters while her emergency council released an additional $1.3 million, spokeswoman Jeanine L'Ecuyer said.

The money is intended for use by counties and municipalities for a variety of purposes, including overtime pay for law enforcement officers, repairs of border fences, costs related to illegal immigrants' deaths, L'Ecuyer said.

Napolitano's action followed by three days a similar declaration by New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

Arizona is the nation's busiest entry point for illegal border-crossings, and illegal immigration has emerged as a significant political issue.

Crimes and other problems associated with the border include illegal immigration, vehicle thefts, drug smuggling and property damage.

"All of this, bottom line every last bit of this, is a federal responsibility but the federal government has not done what it needs to do and has promised to do," said L'Ecuyer,

She added that the actual damage and the level of frustration compelled Napolitano to act.

2. dissolve corporations convicted of hiring illegal immigrants and seize their assets
3. charge all holders of voting stock in corporations convicted of hiring illegal immigrants with slavery, punishable by hard time in prison.

There'd be a lot less of this snakehead garbage going on that way.

8. Yea, but who would want the police state needed for enforcement

This artificial world we have in the US was also really created by corporations in truth. Mostly somehow the little guy always loses when the government makes big moves and real law enforcement is multiproged approach. No doubt going after a few big fish would send a message but at what price for the rest of us?

I would give up on the idea the US government ever worked for the little guy in the first place though. America's free enterprise system is only designed to find the cheapest way to screw the little guy with the least amount of effort.

company and also anyone else at the company responsible for the hiring of the illegals, just like they do with drug laws. If the government did this a few times, it would throw such a scare into the scum the rest would probably stop. The people who do the hiring have $$$$$$$$$$as their biggest motive. 13. Why was the Mountain Name change a fiasco????

As a long time Arizonan, the only problem with the name change was that it gave the Republicans something to attack Napolitano on.

To change the Mountain from "Squaw" which is an insult to the Indians, to "Piestewa," the first American Indian woman killed in a war (Iraq) was an extremely high honor to an Indian warrior.

The Republicans attempted to change every Arizona historical name to be replaced with Ronald Reagan.
