Spc. James Edward Powell II, 26, died Sunday when his Bradley armored vehicle struck a land mine near Beiji, 30 miles north of Tikrit, the Army said Thursday.
Powell, a Columbus native, wanted to join the state police in Kentucky, where his wife is from, after his current tour ended in a few months.
"He just wanted to make something of his life. He wanted to go into the military, then become a cop," said lifelong friend Adam Warrix, 26, of Columbus. "He was outgoing and always looking to help someone out."
Powell was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment. The unit is part of the 4th Infantry Division, which controls a large swath of northern Iraq and is based in Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown 120 miles north of Baghdad.
Powell graduated from Linden McKinley High School in 1996 and enlisted in the Navy. He joined the Army in January 2001 in Radcliff, Ky., military officials said.
His wife, Ruby Powell, and their 2-year-old daughter, Laurin, live at Fort Hood, Texas, where Powell's Army unit is based
