19 Soldiers Struck by Lightning in Georgia
19 Soldiers Struck by Lightning in Ga.

Wednesday August 17, 2005 4:31 AM

FORT BENNING, Ga. (AP) - A lightning strike sent 19 Fort Benning soldiers to the hospital Tuesday as a storm brought between 2 and 3 inches of rain to the area.

Most of the soldiers were treated and released from Martin Army Community Hospital, although four remained hospitalized overnight for observation.

The soldiers, who are in basic training, were on their last day of a field exercise and preparing to head back to their barracks because of the weather when they were spread out as part of a precaution against lightning, Fort Benning spokeswoman Monica Manganaro said.

``They had them ground their equipment so they weren't holding weapons,'' she said. ``They did all the right things.''

2. Thank DOG!
They did the right thing. An important thing to remember is in an area struck by lightning stay still for awhile or take very small baby steps, very small, cows with 4 hooves (longer distance than us between contacts) on the ground get electrocuted little after the lightning strikes. It's a resistance and amp thing.

6. Why are we hearing this from a UK site?
I live here in Ga. and I know we had bad storms over the entire State. My HS Internet was out for 24 hrs, and has been sporadic even through today. When I called the cable Co, they told me there were only 3 little towns in Ga. that HAD service, and the rest of the State system was down. BUT, I didn't hear anything about these soldiers on our local news, nor on the national or cable news either!

WHY do we have to hear this stuff via the UK?????

8. Oh m'God!
We have an extended family member in basic training at Ft. Benning right now: my husband's sister's grandson!

Does anyone know if any names were released for those who were struck?
