Many dead, wounded in Baghdad car bombs -- police
BAGHDAD, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Two car bombs exploded minutes apart at a busy bus and taxi station in central Baghdad on Wednesday, causing many casualties, police sources said.

"There are many wounded and killed," one police officer said. One bomb went off at an entrance to the Nahda bus station and a second went off inside several minutes later.

A third blast was heard by Reuters reporters in the city centre about 15 minutes later. It was not clear where it was.

1. Are there still people who claim Iraq is better off now than before we
invaded? I avoid conservatives these days, for fear of serving time in prison for assault.

This is getting more horrific by the day, and the people in charge flat-out don't care.

Triple explosions shake Baghdad

Three huge explosions have rocked the centre of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, with reports of a number of people killed and wounded.

The blasts occurred within minutes of each other, two reportedly at the busy Nahda bus station.

The third blast is said to have gone off at a nearby hospital 15 minutes later, as victims of the first two attacks were being brought in.

It comes as Iraq's politicians continue talks to reach a deal on a new charter.

"Two cars exploded in the same al-Nahda bus station 10 minutes apart and there are number of victims," an interior ministry source was quoted by AFP news agency as saying.

"One car exploded inside the station and the other at the entrance."

The third car bomber detonated his explosives at Kindi Hospital in the same neighbourhood, causing several casualties, police said.

Grim news.

At least 43 people were killed and 76 wounded, an official in the Interior Ministry said, adding: "The casualty figure could rise as there are charred bodies all over the place."

15. Don't worry
this is just the last throes of a failed insurgency. Now let's focus on the good things happening in Iraq today. All this negativity is such a downer.

Three Car Bomb Attacks Kill 43 in Baghdad

Wednesday August 17, 2005 12:16 PM

By ANTONIO CASTANEDA

Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Three car bombs exploded near a bus station and hospital in Baghdad Wednesday, killing at least 43 people and wounding 89 in the deadliest attacks in the capital in weeks, police said. Survivors searched charred buses and cars for signs of relatives.

The violence came as Iraq's leaders resumed negotiations on a draft of a new constitution, a charter they hope will bring stability and help end the insurgency. The document was to be finished Monday, but the deadline was extended one week.

A suicide car bomber targeting policemen detonated his vehicle outside the Nahda bus station in central Baghdad, one of the city's major transit points, the U.S. military said.

Triple bombing breaks Baghdad lull, kills 43
Wed Aug 17, 2005 10:11 AM GMT

By Alastair Macdonald

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Three car bombs killed more than 40 people in a coordinated attack on a Baghdad bus station in the morning rush hour on Wednesday, ending a lull in insurgent attacks as Iraqi leaders resumed talks on a new constitution.

At least 43 people were killed and 76 wounded, an official in the Interior Ministry said, adding: "The casualty figure could rise as there are charred bodies all over the place."

Police and medics were among the dead, struck by the third bomb, between the bus station and the nearby Kindi hospital as victims of the earlier blasts were being taken there.

One witness said a bus about to depart for Iraq's second city of Basra, in the Shi'ite south, had been incinerated by the blast and it appeared many of passengers were killed.

The multiple explosions suggested an attack by one of the Islamist radical groups active in the Sunni Arab insurgency against the U.S.-backed, Shi'ite-led government -- although unlike many bombings by groups like al Qaeda, police said it was not clear if any of the cars was driven by a suicide attacker.
