it's like Chechnya--sure, they blasted their way in somewhat easily. (murdering thousands, but they have the wrong flag and apparently pray to the wrong dude, so..) But as long as they're there as an occupying power, at least a dozen occupation soldiers a week will die in endless "minor" exchanges, and it'll be that way no matter how harsh they get with the locals. In fact, the harsher and more "thorough" the occupation forces get in trying to curb the resistance the more popular and lasting it'll be.
...all the same, the top propagandists will re-declare victory at a fairly regular rate, pose for a few photo ops with the chosen quislings to act as the proxy, "everything's going great!", bleh..

That average will probably rise if resistance in the South continues (and seeing how Iraq has 40-1 on the Chechen population a dozen weekly may end up as a low average). It's not just Sadr's Jaish al-Mahdi like Bremer's press squad is trying to present (that was also in the minitru memos), even the people around Ayatallah al-Udma Sayyid Ali Sistani, notorious for his passive tendences, are losing patience with things.

that pretty much is a year away. at 330 now. about 2 a day from here on out, at least.

the attacks have been rising 10 a day to 23 or something like that and it is showing for more troops are coming home in body bags.

still, many more are losing limbs or just plain out committing suicide.

It is clear a plan for Iraqi self rule must be established ASAP, like within a month.

Get the troops out now.

read about him before--Sheikh Mahmud al-Hassani was another student of Muqtada Sadr's father, he has militia behind him as well, from your piece it seems to have been the people involved here.

Another former student of Ayatallah al-Udma Sayyid Mohammed Sadiq al-Sadr to have an active force is Sheikh Mustafa/Mohammed (seen him referred to as both, not sure which is correct) al-Yaqubi, the Asia Times had an interesting piece on him when he formed his anti-occupation movement a few months ago. Haven't heard much of him since, but that may be because Muqtada Sadr is playing the lightning rod.

Sadr may be getting the attention, but he's not the only leader among the Shia that is displeased with the occupation.

All the recent reports of american deaths have came in threes, 12 in what five days? If that rate holds up, using my eighth grade math and giving up a couple of days lets see 4.12=48. It won't be long before someone starts too notice that things aren't all roses and sunshine in Iraqnam.

That makes 335 americans dead who should still be alive, and the number of wounded is anyone's guess, some of those wounded, well, I'd say life is pretty much over for them as well, stop the maddness now.
