Green says establishing artificial deadline for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq will fuel insurgency

GREEN BAY – U.S. Rep. Mark Green (R-Green Bay) criticized new legislation by U.S. Senator Russ Feingold Thursday that would establish a deadline for withdrawing American troops from Iraq. Green, who has visited Iraq twice since Operation Iraqi Freedom began, issued the following statement in response to Feingold’s plan.

“As signs of progress continue to spring forth from Iraq, the terrorists and insurgents grow more and more desperate in their attempts to derail Iraq’s steady march toward democracy. They know that with every school built, every soldier trained, and every vote cast in the new Iraqi parliament, their campaign of fear and destruction grows weaker and weaker.

“There are certainly challenges that remain, and we all mourn each and every American who gives their life to protect our freedom. But, Senator Feingold’s legislation allows the insurgents to think that they are succeeding. It tells the insurgents that they need only continue their attacks and hold out a little longer and our forces leave. Plain and simple, setting such a deadline fuels their efforts, and undermines all the excellent work of our servicemen and women up to this point.

Feingold Urges Troop Withdrawal by End of '06


Sen. Russell D. Feingold (D-Wis.) called on the White House yesterday to withdraw all U.S. forces from Iraq by the end of next year and criticized fellow Democrats for being too "timid" in challenging the Bush administration's war policy.

Feingold, who is among the Democrats considering a run for president in 2008, became the first senator to propose a specific deadline for pulling all 138,000 U.S. troops out of Iraq. His comments also laid bare the rising tension within his party about how to respond to President Bush on the war.

In a telephone interview from Wisconsin, Feingold said he has heard a wave of public disenchantment at 15 town hall meetings so far during the August recess, leading him to propose a Dec. 31, 2006, deadline.

"There's a deepening feeling of dismay in the country about the way things are going in Iraq," Feingold said. He rejected Bush's assertion that a deadline would make it easier for insurgents to simply hang on. "I think he's wrong. I think not talking about endgames is playing into our enemies' hand."

One way or the other the Iraqis are falling into civil war. What he is really saying is that we will be there for a very, very long time. And the chances that the entire region will fall apart, especially if we attack Iran, are coming closer to probable. One glimmer of hope comes from Israel, and the moving of the "settlers" out of the Gaza strip. Let's hope that isn't too little, too late.

And, on edit, is it possible that our leaving could actually defuse the entire insurgency? But, then, I suppose a real coalition of the willing would have to step in.

9. Here's the real reason the GOP doesn't want Dems setting deadlines

Their plan for 2006 is to withdraw a significant number of troops, saying we have succeeded in our mission, and use the withdrawal and "victory" for campaign purposes.

If Dems start calling for withdrawal deadlines, then it takes that campaign tool away from the GOP. They have to fight it or else they look like they're caving in to the Dems demands.

It's a win/win situation for us, I think.

It also seems blatantly stupid on Green's part. He's running for Gov. in WI next year. This is a state that has elected Dems to the senate with modest to large margins since 1988 and Feingold's popularity is only going up. Seems like a big mistake to make at the beginning of the gov's race to set yourself apart from the most popular elected rep the state has.
