Support said growing for Iraq exit plan

Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. - Congressman Walter Jones said Thursday he has about 50 co-sponsors on a joint resolution that calls on President Bush to announce by year's end a plan for withdrawal from Iraq.

The resolution - introduced in June by Jones, another Republican and two Democrats - calls on the president to begin executing the withdrawal by Oct. 1, 2006. It does not set an end date.

"I think that people have finally understood what we're doing," Jones said after a meeting at the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, noting that people have mistakenly thought the resolution was binding.

The initial resolution sponsors are Ron Paul, R-Texas, who voted against the war, and two Democrats who have opposed it, Reps. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio and Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii. Jones said the new supporters include five Republicans.

6. Everyone in the House is up for reelection
But, it's gerrymandered to hell and back, so these people might be in the handful of competitive districts.

4. He's just trying to stay employed
He knows that neither he or his party have a future as long as he's seen as tied to Bush.

5. Don't let the pukes take the initiative!
They WANTED this war, it's THEIRS. Don't let them be tied to the movement to get out.

Perhaps one of our spineless Dems would like to introduce this instead?

7. According to the OP there were 2 dems and 2 reps originally sponsoring
this legislation. Including Kucinich.

The headline gave it to the republicans, but the bill is bipartisan

10. I believe we will see more of this soon. After all their jobs may be
on the line. Worrying about those votes next year.I am too cynical to believe anything else , after watching them for the last few years.

13. This is really a Kucinich/Abercrombie bill
Freedom Fries Jones essentially just hopped aboard, and Ron Paul has always been there in opposing BushCo.

Ron would probably be better off running as a Libertarian Party candidate next year (He was their Presidential candidate for 1988)

14. Kucinich and Paul have chosen to stay in the background for a reason
Namely, to let the newer anti-war representatives become more visible, particularly Jones. The bill will never pass unless more Republicans like him sign on.

Ron Paul was able to do something as a Republican that he was never able to do as a Libertarian, namely vote against the war and the PATRIOT Act.

15. Feingold went even further - wants a date set and binding. Jones
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 10:58 PM by 54anickel
is just jaw-bonin', making sure he points out that those who thought the resolution was binding were mistaken. Might was well be giving the "wink-wink, nudge-nudge". I'm sure Ron Paul, Kucinich and Abercrombie aren't going to be very happy with that Jones quote. Certainly bring the integrity of their resolution to question.

"I think that people have finally understood what we're doing," Jones said after a meeting at the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, noting that people have mistakenly thought the resolution was binding.
