William F. Weld, the colorful former Republican governor of Massachusetts, said yesterday that he planned to run for the same job in New York next year, hoping his platform of tax cuts and social liberalism will make him the first two-state leader since Sam Houston.

Mr. Weld, a native New Yorker who is now an investment adviser on the Upper East Side, said he had been encouraged to run by former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, an old friend, among others. Karl Rove, the White House political adviser, who worked for Mr. Weld in the 1990's, had also told him to consider running against Eliot Spitzer, the likely Democratic nominee, and the two men agreed that Mr. Spitzer was beatable, according to New York Republicans told about the exchange.

Yet Mr. Weld, who is barely known in New York outside of fund-raising, society and political circles, said his desire to run came strictly from "personal motivation" and a belief that New Yorkers had come to like moderate, tax-cutting Republican leaders....

With Gov. George E. Pataki stepping down next year and the Republican nomination wide open, Mr. Weld's affable and unpredictable brand of politics - he once dived fully clothed into the Charles River to show that it was clean - could prove an intriguing match for Mr. Spitzer, the popular state attorney general.

Mr. Weld would face several challenges, political analysts say. His liberalism helped him in heavily Democratic Massachusetts, but it could drive away conservative upstate and suburban voters who can be crucial in statewide races in New York. Just yesterday, in fact, Mr. Weld came under attack from both the right and the left for his past support of gay marriage, which he says he now opposes beyond Massachusetts....

He got bored with being governor of Massachusetts so he asked to be appointed Ambassador to Mexico. Clinton appointed him, John Kerry and other Senate Democrats defended him against Jesse Helms' smears, which did not work. Then he resigned as governor and left Massachusetts out in the cold.

Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld said Friday he plans to seek the Republican nomination for governor of his native New York next year.

If he wins the race to replace outgoing three-term incumbent George Pataki he would be only the second person in U.S. history to be governor of two states. Pataki has announced he would not seek a fourth term next year.

"We are both looking forward to working together toward a successful result next year," Weld said after meeting with Stephen Minarik, the head of the state Republican Party.

Weld's intention to run was first reported Friday in The New York Times.

One warning to New Yorkers (of which Weld is himself, being born and raised in NY), Weld gets bored quite easily. This may be due to his high intellect or his fair-thee-well attitude. For example, here's a photo of Bill (fully clothed) jumping into the Charles River when clean-up of the river had not, as yet, been completed. We think it was due to Weld's boredom with the speakers at the formal gathering. After all, the river at that time was still quite . . . well, crappy. Eh.

In all seriousness, after Clinton nominated Weld for the ambassadorship of Mexico (yup, he did), Billy took crash courses in Spanish and Mexican culture, went down to D.C. to personally lobby the Senate for its approval and met a brick wall called Jesse Helms. Helms wouldn't let Weld get a hearing on Weld's senate confirmation due to the fact that Helms (expressly stated) his homophobia against Weld's homosexual-inclusive stance in law. No, I'm not kidding. Weld wouldn't take no for an answer and lobbied for weeks against Helms. Still no hearing. He returned to Boston and left the governor's position to our then Lieutenant Governor A. Paul Cellucci who became governor . . . am I boring you, yet? LOL

when he was Mass governor he became bored with his job. Some time ago a tornado dropped down in western Mass, a freakishly rare occurance. It caused alot of damage, I don't remember if anyone was killed. I was drving through the are at one point. It looked as if a huge lawnmower had gone nuts. Weld was in New York at some sort of retreat or something. Weld didn't even come back to survey the damage, that duty fell to Lt. Governor Paul Cellucci. If I remember correctly Weld didn't even finish out his term.

I don't hate William Weld, I think he is one of those OK/Old School republicans. I do get the impression he has become bored with whatever he is doing right now. Could be an interesting race between him and Spitzer
