Air Force employee charged with criminal mischief after anti-Bush vandalism

DENVER (AP) - An Air Force Reserve lieutenant colonel faces eight counts of criminal mischief for allegedly vandalizing cars at Denver International Airport with anti-President Bush messages over the last eight months, the Denver district attorney said Thursday.

Alexis Fecteau, 42, was charged with seven misdemeanors and a felony for allegedly damaging eight cars in the airport's parking lot by painting and scratching them, the DA's office said in a statement.

Police Capt. John Kostigan has said Fecteau spray-painted over pro-Bush stickers and often added his own message to the sides of the vehicles, including a vulgarity, between December and July.

An arrest affidavit said the manager at the National Security Space Institute in Colorado Springs told detectives he started vandalizing vehicles at DIA during the 2004 election campaign. Authorities said he was caught on a surveillance video vandalizing an undercover police car with Bush stickers.

3. You know, when I first read about this story I kind of sympathized

with the guy even though he definitely expressed his anger in inappropriate, and criminal, ways. But now I wonder if there might be a Parlockian motive. Someone with enough discipline to become an Air Force Lt. Col. should certainly have enough discipline to refrain from vandalizing cars, no matter how angry he might be.

Edit to add: I'm even more suspicious now that I've noticed this happened in Colorado. Colorado, the base camp of many fundie, military, and intelligence organizations. Hmmm. Anybody know anything more about this guy?

9. According to the original story
the Denver police set up a sting using a car with Bush stickers to catch the guy.

I mentioned at the time I thought that was a little odd because the DPD would be very unlikely to get concerned about someone vandalizing Kerry\Edwards stickered vehicles.

And at the airport? You'd have a lot less chance of being caught at a shopping mall or park & ride.

Something just smells bad about this especially since it was a Denver cop a few months ago who IIRC arrested a woman for an "anti-Bush sticker on her car.

8. Sounds like entrapment
and what about his first amendment rights?

10. I don't think even in Bush's AmeriKKKa that the first amendment
protects destruction of property. Especially when it belongs to someone else.

12. He may have been misguided
but I don't see why it should be criminal.

11. Not entrapment. Bait cars are often used to catch car thieves.
