Bush Plans Sept. 11 Reminders
What began as one mother's vigil on a country road in Texas two weeks ago has grown into a nationwide protest, putting a grieving human face to the miseries of war and the misgivings about President Bush's strategies in Iraq.

It's still not clear whether Cindy Sheehan's effort was the start of a lasting anti-war movement or a fleeting summertime story fueled by media-savvy liberal interest groups.

snip

Changing the subject would help Bush, and he has a chance to do that with the upcoming fourth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist strikes. Aides say the president plans to invoke Sept. 11 in his weekly radio address Saturday as he begins a weeklong push to remind Americans why he believes the United States must stay on the offensive in Iraq and not bow to terrorists. He plans to address the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Monday and a National Guard group on Wednesday.

I can still smell the acrid smoke, I can still hear the sirens, I can still see the flames. Thanks anyway, George.

6. This is not going to be a popular thing to say
I'm tired of hearing about 9/11. Now if you lost a family member on that day, then you are excused. Same for people who were badly injured on that day too. This message is not for you.

But for everybody else, GET OVER IT! It happened, it was a tragedy, it's over and it was 4 years ago. We had an appropriate period of mourning and anger at the terrorists who did this, but now we need to (in the words of our president) "move on with our lives". We lose 30,000 people a year because of the flu, and thousands more each year due to violent crimes, car accidents, cancer and other freak accidents that take place in the workplace, on farms and in homes. How many people die each year due to medical mistakes or because they don't have health insurance? More than we lost on 9/11.

More civilians have now been killed by the US in Iraq and Afghanistan than we lost on 9/11. That's civilians, not "insurgents" or certified terrorists, but civilians who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The number of US troops lost in Iraq and Afghanistan now stands at almost 2100, which is increasingly close to the number of people lost on 9/11.

7. I will never forgive, never forget, and never "get over it."
The act of treason by Bush, Cheney, Rummy, et al that killed 3000 people on 11 Sept 2001 does affect me personally regardless of whether anyone I knew died as a direct result. It has made my country into a fascist dictatorship.

8. Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9 1 1
This is getting very tired now.I am sick and tired of hearing Bush refer to 9 11 to the war in Iraq.
Iraqis are innocent. They were not killing americans before we attacked them.
All Americans who support Bush and his illegal war,in effect are partially responsible for the death and injury of their loved ones over there, and are prolonging the death, destruction and misery in Iraq for both Americans and Iraqis.
As a disabled american veteran, this draft dodging, chicken hawk, unelected Prez is not defending America or our freedoms.

14. I won't get over it. I am using it to get rid of Mr.bush
I am using the anger at the administration that the exploitation of 9/11 has coalized. I will not get over it, but use that to help get rid of this administration. You are right that more people die of preventable (or not) reasons you listed, but as long as the USA military stays in Iraq, I will continue to remind people that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, bush lied, manipulating us all, and press for regime change here at home.

16. I was there in downtown NY - not at the center
but close enough - near the ferry. I remember a 20 story wall of smoke rolling down wall street (due to a weirdness of NYC buildings we couldn't see the towers from where we were - it wasn't until later that I found out what happened) I remember walking north with my co-workers and thousands of other in a grey could - I remember the sound of jet fighters overheard - I remember the sight and the smell of huge clouds of gray smoke pouring out of were the towers used to be. I remember walking in an almost deserted new york city and getting a few stares cause my clothes were covered in ash. I remember getting on the Long Island railroad train that was going to take me home and only then feeling scared. The trains ran without a hitch - a 1/2 inch of snow and the whole systems stops - World trade center is destroyed not a problem.

I'm not sure you get over something like that. You do adjust, you do get better, you do go on and things turn more normal but you never really "get over it" it happened and it changed me. Some good some bad changes. The wound heals - you live but the scar is there forever - had a bad flashback when London was bombed but I kind of expected that.

that said - what the little punk ass in crawford is trying to do is keep us terrified so that we won't think.

that is so wrong i don't even have words for it.

17. If it was the only thing that made you popular,
you'd wallow in it, too. Name one good thing George Bush has done for this country. Can't, can you?

But, if he keeps chanting 9/11, 9/11, the people who wanted to blindly strike out in fear, will once again stand behind him.

Furthermore, there are still some uninformed/misinformed people who believe that Iraq had something to do with 9/11. That's why Bush will have Iraq and 9/11 in the same sentence again.

The war is becoming "unpopular." To improve it's image (and thereby Bush's image) we will hear about Iraq and 9/11. It won't work for most, but some will rally to the war cry.

22. That's like FDR celebrating Pearl Harbor, Emperor Hirohito celebrating
the atom bomb or Churchill celebrating the blitz.

Anniversary? Usually celebrates a joyous occasion.

Maybe memorial: a subtle, quiet remembrance, with a moment of silence or a church service.

He's still connecting 9/11 with Iraq. That's his answer to Cindy without speaking directly to her. And we all know it's a lie. But he has to keep doing it, or he'd have to face the abyss of having all that blood on his hands.

No, 9/11 isn't an anniversary or a celebration. It's a sad moment, a major loss, an awakening, and a devastation. Not a time for a parade or a weeklong "push."

He just doesn't get it. And no use pounding our heads against our walls. He and his kind never will.

25. I think we DUers agree
That the Chimp is still trying to justify the illegal invasion of a sovereign nation who posed no threat to us, by tying Iraq to 9-11. There is something ghoulish about him having no respect for the memory of those killed that day, or those who lost loved ones. He seems to believe that because he and his administration screwed up, and allowed this terrible act to happen, he can now use it as an excuse to do anything he wants.

How many of the suicide bombers that day were from Iraq? None. There were no WMD, no threat, no danger of a looming "mushroom cloud", and he knew it. He lied about it, and slanders and punishes those who tell the truth.

Tying 9-11 to Iraq is extremely disrespectful to the victims of that day and their loved ones. We can have a memorial service to honor the victims, and detract from that memory by tying it to something completely unrelated. He is walking over the graves of the dead, draped in an American flag, putting himself in the spotlight, changing the memory of a tragedy to a pep rally for the war in Iraq.

Already, hundreds were dead from the first plane slamming into the WTC. This is your leader in action during the worst terror attack in the nations history, and he was aware of it at the time he was reading, and this is what he chose to do.

38. Hmn...he really wants to remind us how he used 9-11 as an excuse to attack
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 10:01 PM by Garbo 2004
Iraq??? When there was no connection to Iraq? No terrorists in Iraq, no connection with Osama in Iraq, no fundamentalist Islamic regime in Iraq, and NO WMD'S????

Ant the only smoking gun was the stench of his administration's lies and the White House Iraq Group's propaganda marketing campaign to sell an attack on Iraq to the American public like it was a new detergent? Consciously choosing WMD as the angle to play to the American people? Selling fear to the American public when there was nothing to fear fron Iraq? The weapon inspectors were on the ground in Iraq doing their job, but Bush couldn't wait for them to search and tell us there were no WMD to be found. All the places the Administration had pointed out to them were coming up dry. He never wanted to let the inspectors do their job because they knew they wouldn't find what he and his cronies claimed was there.

Does he really, really want to remind us of his administration's war mongering mendacity? Remind us of the lies his administration told about the air quality in New York when they knew damn well it was foul and unsafe? He really wants to remind us of his "got to get on with my life" attitude when faced with families' grief over their lost loved ones?

Go ahead, GW....see how it plays this time around. Go to New York and try your tired old lies. Explain to them why your Administration couldn't be bothered with those who kept warning about Bin Laden and terrorists the spring and summer of 2001.
