Cindy Sheehan: 35% Favorable 38% Unfavorable
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/2005/Cindy%20Sheehan.htm

Cindy Sheehan, the grieving mother who maintained an anti-War protest outside of President Bush's ranch, is viewed favorably by 35% of Americans and unfavorably by 38%.

Sheehan is viewed favorably by 34% of men and 35% of women. Forty-two percent (42%) of men and 34% of women have an unfavorable view.

In general, people see in Sheehan what they want to see. Opinion about her is largely based upon views of the War, rather than views about the woman herself. Democrats, by a 56% to 18% margin, have a favorable opinion. Republicans, by a 64% to 16% margin, have an unfavorable view. Those not affiliated with either major party are evenly divided.

People who think we should withdraw troops from Iraq now have a positive opinion of Sheehan (59% favorable, 12% unfavorable). Those who do not think we should withdraw troops at this time have a negative view (15% favorable , 64% unfavorable).

Among those with family members who have served in the military, Sheehan is viewed favorably by 31% and unfavorably by 48%.

What do poll numbers matter with regard to her?

What's important is the fact that she's forcing Iraq into the light of day and holding Bush** accountable. It's a dirty job, but it's about time SOMEBODY did it.

What matters is whether people hear her. And they do. Besides, "support" is a rather vague term.

19. Quite simple. . .
With the Chimp, they are expressing disapproval of the manner in which he's using the military. However, despite their disapproval of the use to which the military is being put, they retain their positive approval of the military, both as an institution and for the individuals within it. In this light, they perceive Cindy Sheehan negatively, because they believe her protest in some manner reflects poorly on the military or compromises miltary morale.

8. this is good news....
a year ago, I would never have thought approval numbers for a war protest would have been anywhere near that....

this thing cannot be turned around overnight. The neocons have been working on getting into Iraq since at least the 90's - the corporatization of America ramped up heavily during the 80's with Raygun's help. The Christo-fascists have been working at least as long to get to where they are today.

We have to keep walking the walk and talking the talk, keep moving ahead.

Sometimes I lose hope that we will not be able too turn this around, that it's just gone to far - the war, the greed, the loss of civil rights, the coming theocracy.... But I realize that we can't sit back, we just have to keep trudging ahead!

11. Irrelevant ...
It's not about her.

But the radical Republicans want to make it about her.

So, it is important to keep talking about Sheehan ONLY in relationship to the BIG LIES that Bush and his cronies have claimed about this disasterous war.

The only polls that have meaning now are those that show disapproval of Bush's conduct of the war.

39. Polls mean absolutely nothing.
The local tv station interviewed a young mother who had just buried her son this past Spring. They intervewed this Gold Star Mother just prior to the Cindy Vigil to give her reaction to Cindy Sheehan's Crawford protest.

As with Cindy who met the President last year this young mother is still in deep grief and has to believe that her son died for a "Noble Cause."

I felt only compassion for this young Mother and as she gave her interview she only repeated what she had been told by the media whores and the chickenhawk CON's......."Cindy Sheehan is being manipulated by liberal groups such as MoveOn.Org."

The DC socialite politicos/media whores are using the victims of this war to maintain their power and seat at the table.

38. Don't forget the point
Ms. Sheehan isn't doing this for popularity or prestige. She is an intensely grief-stricken mother who needs closure.
I believe that she doesn't want to necessarily embarass the fake president - she does want to make some kind of sense about losing her son.
The rest all comes with the territory.

43. Poll: Most Blame Cindy Sheehan for High Gas Prices
August 19, 2005
Poll: Most Blame Cindy Sheehan for High Gas Prices

According to a recent poll, most Americans place the blame for skyrocketing prices at the pump squarely at the feet of anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan. The poll found that Americans were more likely to blame Mrs. Sheehan for their gasoline woes than they were illegal aliens, homosexuals, child molesters or Democrats.

Prices said to be highest within 100 mile radius of Mrs. Sheehan's protest

By Deanna Swift

WACO, TX—Prices at the gas pump have been surging through the all important summer driving season. But whose fault is it that our Ford Excursions and Cadillac Escalades are so expensive to fill? A new poll may finally have the answer to a question that has so many Americans pumping mad.

The results of the poll confirm that most Americans place the blame for skyrocketing prices at the pump squarely at the feet of anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan. Energy analysts say that the poll's conclusions aren't surprising. Since Mrs. Sheehan began her protest against the Iraq war near the ranch of President George W. Bush, oil prices have shot up nearly $10 a barrel.

Pumping mad at protest mom

According to the poll of 2,130 driving-age adults, conducted by Polltronics, Inc., 73% of Americans say that they think Cindy Sheehan is to blame for surging gas prices at the pump. Of that number, 31% said that Mrs. Sheehan bears all of the responsibility for the rising cost of gas, 26% said that the protesting mom deserves some of the blame and 18% said that she is partly responsible for sky-high gas prices. The remaining 25% believed that Mrs. Sheehan is to blame, but not for the high price of gasoline.

Pollsters then asked respondents to rank various individuals and groups according to the degree of blame they deserve for the recent surge in fuel costs. The list, read to participants in randomized order, included Mrs. Sheehan as well as illegal aliens, homosexuals, child molesters and Democrats. In each case, respondents said that they were more likely to blame Mrs. Sheehan for their woes at the pump than they were any of the other categories. Besides the protesting mom, illegal aliens and homosexuals were most likely to be fingered for the high cost of gasoline.

Prices 'through the roof' in Crawford
Drivers near Crawford, TX say that gas prices have shot up in the weeks since Mrs. Sheehan set up camp near the ranch where President George W. Bush is spending his 5 week vacation. According to Texasgasprices.com, a gallon of gas at one Chevron station in Waco is now $2.69. That's just 18 miles from where Mrs. Sheehan has been presiding over her anti-war protest for the past three weeks.

What would Cindy pay?
Although Cindy Sheehan may be the cause of soaring gasoline costs, she is not immune from feeling a pinch at the pump. The protesting mom is said to drive a vehicle notorious for its fuel inefficiency: the new Hummer H3, a super-size SUV that gets just 20 miles per gallon on the highway. The pink H3 was reportedly donated to Mrs. Sheehan by the activist group Code Pink, while her gas bill is paid by the notorious anti-bush philanthropist George Soros.

Betoniraq_1How this Polltronics poll was conducted
Samples for Polltronics polls are random digit samples of telephone numbers selected using the "probability proportionate to size" method, which means numbers from across the country are selected in proportion to the number of voters in each state.

A computer selects the first eight digits of an actual working number and then appends a two-digit random number to produce a random-digit dial (RDD) sample. An RDD sample allows for contacting not only listed and unlisted numbers, but also households with new numbers.

In order to ensure a distribution of ages and genders within households, the interviewer selects the respondent by asking to speak to the adult with the next birthday. Quotas are applied to ensure the sample mirrors the proportions of voters nationally. Specifically, the aim is for a gender split nationwide of 53% female / 47% male, as well as regional quotas.

The RDD selected phone numbers are sent to the interviewers through computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) software. Both the software and human supervisors monitor each step of the interviewing process. While calls are automatically dialed, the system does not use predictive dialing so prospective respondents always find a live interviewer when they answer their phone.

How much has Cindy Sheehan caused the price of gas to rise in your area? Talk back to deannaswift1@yahoo.com.

It is telling that even this possibly biased poll says republicans have the most negative opinion of someone using her right of free speech where it matters, in the true spirit of Constitution.

I can't also believe this smear campaign by these self claimed "conservatives", Coultier, O'Reilly, Limbaugh et al. Instead of concentrating on her questions, they attack the person.

It is disgusting beyond words. By all means they have the right to disagree with her (how can you disagree with questions is another issue though), they are just not doing that.

I hope majority of people outside DU aren't blind enough not to see this.

58. The question is, how many have heard of her
And how many know what it is she's doing. At any point in the history of the anti-war protests during Vietnam, what would the polling numbers have been on the protesters? For the most part, their negatives would have been much higher than Cindy Sheehan's, I bet? Even those who marched for civil rights were controversial figures. "Too impatient. They want too much, too soon." was a very conventional sentiment about human beings who were just looking for an equal footing with white Americans. Cindy Sheehan made the media pay attention and give what she's doing real coverage. That's a 100% good thing.

60. These numbers are actually surprising to me
I thought she had more support than that from everything I've seen all week.

61. Why Does It Matter?-Exactly!!!!
Last I looked people had a right to stage their own legal non-violent protests in this country wherever and however they were legally able to. To me, it is simply IRRELAVANT whether 31% or 48% oppose or support Cindy's protest. Frankly, I'm glad that SOMEBODY finally got sick enough of Bushco to do something like this and help (finally) draw some attention to the Iraq fiasco/quagmire/boondoggle/utter failure. There shouldn't be any questions about whether or not Cindy Sheehan, Lila Lipscombe (Fahrenheit 9-11), or any other people who have lost loved ones in (or are opposed to) this insane "war" are entitled to protest our government using whatever legal non-violent tactics that they wish. If we are to believe in the ideals that shaped this country then we are ALL entitled (at birth) to protest our government (at least in theory). Also, even if all of the horrible things that they are saying about Cindy turn out to be true, it IN NO WAY discredits her protest or her right to express her views about the Iraq war, nor does the fact that many so-called "liberal advocacy groups" like Moveon.org et al have supported her protest. Republicans have NO moral authority to speak out against Cindy and her protest because we all KNOW that if Cindy was protesting against a Democratic President they would have absolutely NO reservations about supporting, encouraging, and, of course, politicizing it a la Terri Schiavo (although a Democratic president would've probably have already talked with Cindy by now and not just hid away in his vacation home like Bush has).

63. I Agree
I agree - what does it matter what surveys think of her, favorable or unfavorable? Everyone has the right to grieve in their own way. Therefore, why does her opinion matter than a mother who's lost her son and who supports the war in Iraq?

64. That's an excellent question. Or you could even ask, why does her
opinion matter *less* because she is AGAINST the war?

66. There's a gut-level emotional reaction
sometimes called "fear" that, even though most people are now against the war, causes "most people" to react to confontation with a avoid-attack response, rather than a rational, epistemically consistent response. These people can be easily manipulated in polls. To get more of them to agree with Cindy, all you would have to do is first ask them their opinion on the war, THEN ask a leading question on Cindy Sheehan. Cognitive dissonance would take over, and they would be forced into agreeing with her.

As someone said, Cindy is not running for office, so a 40% negative doesn't mean anything; the important number is those against the war, which is running over 60% right now.

The sad thing is that most people use this same gut-level reaction to choose who to vote into office as well, and Republicans own fear.

67. So can the MSM stop beating up on her now, in response to complaints...
from the other side, no doubt? The media have done all they can now to tear her down, which this poll, if it has validity, probably reflects.

68. I just looked at the poll again
and I noticed there is a 3% margin of error, which makes the results statistically tied. Some conservatives are calling this poll a "pluarlity against" Sheehan. WRONG!

71. We all know Rassmussen is a Republican poll
This isn't too surprising. Cindy Sheehan should keep on doing whats she's doing as soon as her mother gets better. She is top priority now. it is up to all of us to keep her spirit alive and growing. Sheehan numbers are meaningless because she is not running for anything.
