MSNBC: Iraq insurgents plan wave of attacks

Iraq insurgents plan wave of attacks
Intelligence points to suicide bombings to coincide with draft constitution.

PENTAGON - United States and foreign intelligence officials tell NBC News they have credible intelligence that insurgents in Iraq have active plans to launch a massive offensive early next week — timed to coincide with the possible draft of an Iraqi constitution on Monday.

According to the officials, terrorists would launch as many as 20 simultaneous suicide bombings, mostly in Baghdad. The plans also include heavy rocket and mortar attacks against U.S. and Iraqi government offices inside Baghdad’s Green Zone, against U.S. military at Baghdad International Airport, and at Abu Ghraib prison.

U.S. officials say the offensive was planned for early this week, but was put on hold when Iraqi’s failed to come up with a draft constitution.

1. They're not insurgents.
They're pissed-off Iraqi citizens.

46. No....they are fighting an occupation
that is justified and within their rights. They are fighting for their country against a foreign invader. That's like saying the Polish citizens who fought against the Germans in Warsaw were simply "killers".

US troops, however, kill without justification.

9. Exactly what I was going to say -- Hersch certainly got MY attn
the other night when he said they were planning what amounted to a "Tet Offensive."

For anyone who lived thru the Vietnam war, those words carry quite a bit of meaning.

And in that case, those "death throes" Cheney talked about aren't for their side.

8. yes, and then Pentagon will take credit for thwarting it
that's why they are spreading the word. If it happens -- they told us so; if it does not, they prevented it. Heads, they win, tails they also win.

24. How does having relatively vague knowledge that it's coming
enable you to stop it?

It's not like they're gonna announce the specific targets in advance. We're presumably already doing everything we can to stop attacks, and we aren't notably successful against just the ordinary daily level of violence.

38. I don't think you understand 'throes'
You see, there are known throes, throes that we know. Then there are unknown throes. These of course are throes we don't know. But then there are the unknown unknown throes. These are the throes we don't know we don't know...you know? So, it's those last ones we are currently dealing with. How many are there? Don't know. In fact, I don't even know I don't know so quit asking.

"U.S. officials say the offensive was planned for early this week, but was put on hold when Iraqi’s failed to come up with a draft constitution."

If the U.S. intelligence knows THAT much, why don't they go in and arrest them all. They obviously know who is involved.

Fucking media falls for and prints that shit all the time.

25. Depending on what the consitution would mean...

for Saudi, Pakistani, US and British interest in Iraq I'd say that if they know when they will launch a 'massive offensive', that's because the Coalition is launching this wave themselve to have changes in the constitution that will protect exclusive oil concessions in Iraq.

After all, they trained guys for that

36. Gen. Richard B. Myers: "Abu Ghraib Photos Could Spark Riots"
Looks like them Washington boys had better keep a tight lid on them photos 'n' videos for a while...at LEAST until after Monday.

:grr:

http://www.salon.com/wire/ap/archive.html?wire=D8BV9FSG0.html

August 13,2005 | NEW YORK -- Releasing photos and videotapes of detainee abuse at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison would aid al-Qaida recruitment, weaken governments in Iraq and Afghanistan and incite riots against U.S. troops, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff warned in court papers.

Gen. Richard B. Myers wrote in recently unsealed court papers filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan that it was "probable that al-Qaida and other groups will seize upon these images and videos as grist for their propaganda mill."

In a response to the arguments by Myers, the ACLU submitted a declaration by retired U.S. Army Col. Michael E. Pheneger, who said Myers "mistakes propaganda for motivation."

Pheneger, a military intelligence officer from 1963 to 1993, said that Iraqi insurgents average 70 attacks a day and that they "will continue regardless of whether the photos and tapes are released."
