Four GIs Killed by Bomb in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan - A roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan killed four U.S. soldiers and wounded three others on Sunday, the U.S. military said. The blast came as the troops were patrolling in Zabul province's Daychopan district, the military said in a statement. The three wounded soldiers were hit by shrapnel and were in stable condition, the military said.

"The unit was conducting offensive operations in support of an ongoing mission to find and defeat enemy forces in the area when the attack occurred," the statement said. "The unit's mission is part of a much larger operation to disrupt enemy forces and to thereby provide a safe environment for upcoming September elections."

The statement quoted Maj. Gen. Jason Kamiya, the U.S.-led coalition's operational commander, as saying the attack would "strengthen, not weaken, the resolve" of the force.

Violence in Afghanistan has flared ahead of the nation's key Sept. 18 legislative elections, which Taliban-led rebels want to sabotage.

3. unreported Casualties
These casualties need to be reported in the media. The important thing avout Meet With Cindy is that it keeps the issue of the Iraq war before the American people.

13. Hell, he fires anybody that dares question the plans.
Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 09:58 AM by tabasco
It's a lot worse than just not listening. He has promoted yes-men into the highest positions and fired the real leaders who had the courage to disagree. I have little faith in the Pentagon anymore. The big bosses are Bush ass-kissers. It will take the military a long time to recover from this incompetent and corrupt leadership.

7. CNN Story: Afghan bomb kills 4 U.S. soldiers
Sunday, August 21, 2005; Posted: 5:32 a.m. EDT (09:32 GMT)

(CNN) -- Four U.S. soldiers have been killed and three others wounded in a bomb attack south of Deh Chopan in Afghanistan, according to the U.S. military.

The three were wounded while trying to pull their fellow soldiers to safety, the military said in a statement on Sunday. They were wounded in "a number of secondary explosions" sparked by a fire started by the bomb blast.

All three were taken to a nearby base for treatment of shrapnel wounds, the military said, and were in stable condition.

The soldiers' unit was conducting operations as part of a mission to find and defeat suspected insurgents in the area, with a goal of providing a safe environment for upcoming September elections, the military said. No further details were released.

Eleven U.S. soldiers have died this month in Afghanistan.

10. Why isn't anybody talking about Afghanistan?
Especially on "Talk" Sunday? We'll hear all about the Pope and World Youth Day and they'll all gush about Lance and his buddy George going bikeriding together, but there is a deafening silence about the escalation of hostilities in Afghanistan.

14. 4 U.S. Soldiers Killed in Afghan Bombing (The Forgotten War)
4 U.S. Soldiers Killed in Afghan Bombing

Sunday August 21, 2005 3:31 PM

By DANIEL COONEY

Associated Press Writer

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - A roadside bomb killed four U.S. soldiers and wounded three others Sunday as they patrolled southern Afghanistan - the deadliest attack on American forces here in nearly two months, the U.S. military said.

Militant assaults elsewhere killed a senior pro-government Islamic leader and two Afghan policemen, as Taliban-led rebels step up a campaign to subvert key Sept. 18 legislative elections. Seven U.S. soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan during the past four days.

On the outskirts of the capital, Kabul, a roadside bomb exploded near a U.S. Embassy convoy, wounding two American officials, an embassy spokesman said.

``The vehicle was part of a convoy on routine embassy business,'' spokesman Lou Fintor said, adding that the Americans suffered minor injuries.

15. It doesn't surprise that the medieval Taliban can still
organize and kill soldiers. We are so tied up in Iraq, this war is the truly forgotten war. It doesn't surpirse me that you had to find this article in a UK newspaper. I wonder how long or if ever this will be mentioned in the MSM here in the US.
