as any other poll. IMO they are not known as a partisan poll (like Rasmussen) or anything.

10. Here is an article discussing polling firms and how accurate they

were in the 2004 election.

You will see ARG is among all the rest of the standard polling firms - Gallup, CBS/NYT, Rasmussen, Zogby, Quinnipiac, Mason-Dixon, Pew, etc.

161. the Media
I can well remember the Berrigan brothers during Vietnam and other protestors. Some of them hounded defense company executives and threw water balloons full of blood on them while they were walking down the street. I am wondering at what time people are going to start throwing blood on the Nazi journalists that represent the vast majority of the media? When are people going to have enough? When are they going to surround CNN and just sit-in? When are they going to demand a free, honest and open discussion of the War with the Media? Make them the subject of civil disobedience and protest? They are whores who have traded the blood of young Americans and Iraqi citizens for safe tracks to celebrity, wealth and power ass-licking. I don't understand why a huge movement is not yet afoot to confront them directly. People whine and whine but these criminals continue to ignore the peace movement, disseminate mass lies and omissions on a scale not seen since Goebels attacked the Jews and they have done so largely with impunity. This must end. The only way out of American facism is to face down the corporate media with very, very large and sustained acts of peaceful disobedience. If it is no longer convenient, lucrative and easy to lie, if in fact it becomes shameful as it once was, then real stories can be reported again and the people will finally be told the truth.

King would march on CNN and ask them why they are participating in murder, falsehood and deceit? Ghandi would stand outside Fox with tens of thousands and hold mass teach-ins and fasts. He would make the truth a religious endeavor. And he would most definitely focus on the Media as a very important part of his quest. And yet we continue to listen daily to their casual, happy, blithe propaganda. Are we content to just fire off an email or flip the channel? Where is the strength and purpose in that? These are thug criminals who lie for a living. Doesn't anyone get it?

Wonder when the press will stop those panning shots of the audiences. It may start to look too obvious.

On this side of the room we have the the "Haves" and "Have mores". On this side we have the "Have Nots" who live their lives in an information vacuum - the poor of the "information ghettos".

There was a huge (bussed in?) contingent from Tejas that he recognized and fawned over. No pan shots of the audience. Largely polite applause and what sounded like huge applause .... but oddly from only one part of the room .... and of a vlume all out of proportion to other parts of the room .... like maybe his shills were specially mike?

I dunno .... but it all sounded **very** phoney to me.

9. Hmm. Push poll: They mixed job performance with other questions and
put the job performance at the end of the series of questions.

When the republican do this we call it a "push poll" meant to steer people to a direction based on a series of questions leading up to the question they have been leading the people to.

16. The placement of the question does not make it a push poll
necessarily, although it could. More important is the wording of the questions to suggest an answer. That doesn't seem to have happened here, unless you'd care to point out a leading question?

Under your theory, simply contemplating the state of the economy would cause most people to dispprove of Bush! Simply contemplating! But, isn't that one of the criteria by which people should base their approval or disapproval of his performance?

27. A "push poll" question is...
...more along the lines of "Given that we really gave no other choice, who do you think would win the election today, Bush, or a mentally retarded Al Qeada leper?" When you answer, "Well, Bush I suppose, but..." they use your answer to show that Most Americans Believe Bush Will Be Victorious over Al Qeada."

The ARG poll mentioned isn't technically a "push poll," although you could correct about the way the questions seems to lead to at least a general conclusion. But I don't think most people would make it through a poll like this if it were too one-sided. Anymore, people are fed up or acting on blind faith. The former would likely answer the same way anyway, while the latter would likely hang up on the pollster, just after proclaiming her to be a godless AQ sympathizer.

18. LOL! Yeah, Keep Telling Yourself That
:eyes:

You don't even know what a push poll is. A push poll is when you say "How would you feel about Bush if we told you he liked raping young boys?"

The goal of a push poll is NOT to get data, but to PUSH a lie into the public's consciousness, like Bush did to McCain in the '04 primaries when they asked people how they would feel about McCain if they learned he had fathered black children.

28. This does not fit the definition of a push poll.
"The National Council on Public Polls (NCPP) defined a push poll in a 1995 press release as: a telemarketing technique in which telephone calls are used to canvass vast numbers of potential voters, feeding them false and damaging 'information' about a candidate under the guise of taking a poll to see how this 'information' affects voter preferences. In fact, the intent is to 'push' the voters away from one candidate and toward the opposing candidate. This is clearly political telemarketing, using innuendo and, in many cases, clearly false information to influence voters; there is no intent to conduct research."
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m2519/is_4_21/ai_62410241

Also, it is unclear what order the questions were asked in this poll. The results are reported as though job approval was the first question, but the wording of the questions show the two job approval questions last. ARG is an established polling company so it likely knows how to conduct a poll using sound methodology.

53. Not a push poll.
Putting an overall rating at the end of a series of related questions is done to elicit a more well considered response. Asking the overall job performance questions first would be more likely to garner jingoistic "I support my president, right or wrong" responses.
Survey professionals understand how responses may be skewed by poor survey design. That's why it's important to know whether the "survey" was done by a reputable firm or a shill for an interest group.

19. well...

ARG measures the low end of Bush support. Personally, I think they've a little undermeasured his minimal support just a little- by a point or two. In ARG polling the Undecideds all lean Bush/Republican. (In e.g. Gallup polling, the Undecideds lean the other way.)

The 'disapprove' is the important number. 56% is nasty- Bush has very little room left to manouver and minimal chance to propose new stuff. When it clears 60% solidly Republican Washington will go into paralysis. As it is they're treading water. And there's nowhere to go but down.

I place the words in quotes because I'm referring to the very narrow and often hypocritical "morality" of the far far right.

Certainly Bush has benefited the rich, but that's a small segment of the population anyway, and the group most able to do well under ANY administration.

No, it's not them populating most of the Bush supporters. It's the "morality disenfranchised" who need to force their conscience on others to be happy.

25. From the "local news"
Couple days ago I was snoozing through the local news as they reported that here in Maine Bush had like only a 40% approval rating, blah, blah. Then they said they ran a nation-wide poll and the approval rating was 41%. In certain ways I didn't put a great deal of stock in that since I doubt it was a real professional survey. But in other ways I thought that they probably were closer to the truth than we know in that so many of these other polls do the "heavy weighting" to the repubs because they maintain that repubs are the ones more likely to vote. However, since this is not an election year it never made any sense to weight the polls in that manner when asking this question. Bottom line: indeed, I think these type of numbers are very much closer to the truth than our politicians would like to admit. And, I hope our scared crapless, half-wit Dem politicians wake up to it all and start making hay while the sun is shining.

He plunged to the low 40s, and then rebounded with an integrated propaganda campaign for the November election. He had about reached the Abu Ghraib trough until this poll came out. It is only one poll, though.

amigo, i differ.

graph i saw here at DU and printed out, showed bush's lowest ever was before nine-eleven in 'O1. Then he was at fifty five percent.

WTC bumped him up, and only lately has he come below fifty five, way on down to low forties recently, and now 36.

Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 11:07 AM by beetbox
there are no depths too low for these people to sink to. There is no atrocity too horrible for them to commit. These are people who value power, and money. Period.

Anything you can think of, any act you can imagine, they are capable of. If this were not true, we would not now be causing the deaths, and horrific injuries, that are being suffered in Iraq, on both sides.

We are not dealing with normal, sane, humans now...we are dealing with sociopaths with positions of power, who will wield that power to seize anything they can, simply because they can. Never, ever, for even a moment, underestimate their capacity for evil.

If Bush were not the son of a wealthy, powerful man, he would be a wino living in a cardboard box under a freeway someplace. If Rumsfeld were not in his position, he would be babbling, between doses of powerful anti-psychotic drugs, in a state runned mental facility somewhere.

The sad truth is that this country has been overtaken by sociopaths. men who have the positions, and the money, to live out their lunatic fantasies, and bring this once great country to oblivion.

Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes...known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few…No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.
– James Madison, Political Observations, 1795

I'm in a suburb of 'the burgh' in the other end of the state. But I spent some time in Philly at UPenn and I really did enjoy your city very much.

I wanted an Eagles/Steelers Superbowl last year, but sadly, it was not to be....maybe this year. Now, the Pirates, don't even go there...great new baseball stadium, tragically consistent losing team.

Enjoy DU!

I love the young guys coming up, like Chase Utley, but they're never gonna make it. It's the same every damn year. Yeah, we got a new stadium too but it's kind of a joke.

Now, the birds, they might do it this year. Eagles/Steelers - maybe but those Pats still look strong. You're gonna need some luck to get there.

Freely translated "it is." My memory of the first translation in first year Latin, nearly fifty years ago, keeps me engaged in the misapprehension that I can still think in Latin. Villa est villa Romana=(The) house is (a) Roman house.

163. what really matters
The bush-turd's numbers are now lower than Nixon's worst levels but lets get real: it doesn't really matter. These are very committed facists. The only thing these numbers signal is the very high likelihood that these thugs will stage a domestic terror attack as a means to create mass confusion and summon wide ranging fear and dutiful support for their next target which no doubt is Iran. They will stop at nothing.

People who actually still beleive that numbers will effect the outcome of the coming 06' elections are,I beleive, living in a dream world. They control the count and suppress those key areas where they need to. They did not win in 00' but massively suppressed the vote in Florida. They did not win in 04', Rove managed a thorough corruption of optical scanners and machine counts. Ohio was an outright joke. The exit polls prove this. You will not get satisfaction at the polls. There will be no justice until the vote is manually counted again but momentum is in the opposite direction and Diebold is feverishly trying to secure California contracts. Wake Up everybody.

The texas turd's best opportunity for securing his 'legacy', passing on power to some other hack and protecting himself and his cronies from criminal prosecution is to start another War after first staging a fake fear event in this country. Then he can declare Martial Law and suspend most political discourse. If you think the Media would not cooperate you are sorely mistaken. These recent polls are therefore very scary. They are a precursor of what I suspect is to come.

while the soldiers are struggling day in and day out in 120 degree heat and so many are dying. I think they wonder how much of a hardship does he have to put up with by staying in the White House being waited on hand and foot by servants...he couldn't have gone to Camp David for long weekends to do his bike riding?

How many Joe Six-packs get five week vacations every year?

GHWB was less popular than his son because of the "wimp" factor, as stupid as that sounds to people born in the 20th century. I think the fact that Bush is kicking back on the ranch while people are dying coupled with the fact that he's clearly running scared of a middle-aged woman is hitting him hard and close to his base.

82. One third of the country would approve of Bush...
...even if he barbecued and ate a baby in the Rose Garden, I believe, because they will blindly support whatever Republican (and/or "Christian") is in office. So I think poll numbers in the 20s are unlikely -- barring a "dead girl or live boy" problem -- and support for Bush is very near its theoretically possible low.

107. AAR UP TO 67 STATIONS: BUSH DOWN TO 36% - connected? YES
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 03:09 PM by oscar111
As AAR .. airamericaradio.com or airamerica.com ?... spreads truth for the very first time to

Dallas
San Antonio
Atlanta
New Orleans
The Carolinas
Anchorage
corpus christi/houston
Colorado

and a few other RW areas, you see bush in free fall.

bush made errors before AAR, but MSM kept the truth away.

Now, bush errors are pointed out to Joe Sixpack, and Joe hears us.

get union LOCALS in your non-AAR town to buy a station, like the anchorage IBEW local did, and put AAR on the air. Dont wait for the sluggard AFLCIO HQ to do it, get a LOCAL to act.

urge AFLCIO and DNC to give expansion grants to AAR.

put AAR in your Will

take out tiny weekly newspaper ads if AAR is in your town, for publicity. In the weekly alternative newspapers.
=== some places dont have real alternative papers, so use the "wine and cheese" weeklies

Use free yahooGroups group forums to get to know locals who also want AAR to get a station in your new town. Google yahoogroups Totally free. three minutes to set up.

118. Democrats in Congress should run with these numbers.
Now we should press a relentless attack while his soft underbelly is exposed. Democrats in Congress should now attack the Bush administration, as it is clear that public opinion is squarely on our side.

Crush him -- make the public see him for the failure, for the fool, that he is, friends. Expose his lies. Use his lies to make the public see what a charlatan Bush is. I haven't felt this much joy for some time. Pray God Bush is forced and/or removed from office.

156. sorry - i think the the #s are a bit deflated.
If you look at that pollkatz graph, the yellow diamonds are I'd guess on average 4% lower than the average of the other major pollsters. Over the course of three years that's pretty huge. As much as I'd like it to be true I find it dubious.
As Bush's approval ratings decline the numbers begin to butt up against the the hardcore repugs and loyal Bush supporters ever more. It's hard to fathom such a precipitous drop in the polls considering where he already was barring a significant negative event (I don't think camp Cindy is it either). The news hasn't been good but it also hasn't changed that dramatically.

I think that pollkatz graph would be better with orange stars and green clovers.

159. Dubya's plummeting...
...numbers are both pleasing and disturbing. Pleasing because they do indicate people are beginning to see Bushco for what it is, disturbing because it is not the way of an illegitimate, crooked, fascist regime to sit idly by and watch the citizenry begin to reclaim their country. How much further can we reasonably expect these people to let his numbers slip before they engineer and execute the next 9/11? Not much further in my opinion. I would expect the final details are being worked out if they haven't been already. The blame will be assigned to Iran and some kind of retaliatory strike (maybe nuclear) will follow. It will be martial law here and Cindy Sheehan will no longer be a front page story. Everything is in place for them to mobilize the brown-shirts to crush domestic dissent. They're itching to do it and the next 9/11 event will give them all the justification they need. Dark days ahead.

about that so they won't ever "fall" for their wicked "new Pearl Harbor" (if they ever commit another one in LIHOP or MIHOP)!

Please, everybody who can print flyers about the PNAC, do so, and then distribute them in your neighborhood. Tack them on telephone posts and tape them on walls (make sure nobody can see you), leave them in internet-cafes, laundry boards, etc. - everywhere you can: this is an EMERGENCY!!

Let's work for the PNAC gangsters to be held accountable for all their crimes they commit day in, day out, for power and greed!

P.S.: Please, someone also post something similar to this in the DU Activist HQ forum: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=106

168. but the 9/11 and a 1/2 theory is a Catch 22
Bush supporters point to the fact that there hasn't been another domestic 9/11 as proof that the War on Whateva is working. Most people gave Bush a pass for 9/11 or, ha ha, blamed it on Clinton, but he would get blamed this time. And remember the CIA is currently furious with Bushco so the potential for covert ops on the home front is lower.

Bushco will be convening some focus groups no doubt and they'll push out some counter-messages that will attempt to re-encamp the lost support. Maybe it will work.

Iran is a tough call as our troops are stretched thin. Heads up if Bush appears to cave and set a deadline for troop withdrawal from Iraq - that may signal the timing of an Iran strike.

Martial law - you mean like random bag searches on public transportation, offshoring of dissenters, misinformation campaigns through MSM? Got all that. Who needs a curfew when FAUX News has round-the-clock "coverage"?

If all else fails, call Diebold CEO and threaten release of incriminating information on his illicit affair and love child, or whatever they certainly have on him.

169. I am doom and gloom
Today..so I better get off DU. But the negative view of this is this folks: There are plenty of countries in the world where they despise, detest and KNOW their leader is worthless and must go. However, HE still has all the military, HE has the corrupt media, HE has all the money, HE has all the propaganda. And he even has the machines that tally the votes. The people are no longer needed. If these figures are true, WHY are there not more balanced represnenations in our media? WHY isn't the other side seeing he is WEAK and attacking and taking him down? There is no more pressure on Bush to do a damn thing differently than when his polls are in the positive. Think about that. WE no longer matter. America is becoming a third world country. The rich on the top control everything-including the information. They no longer need you. These numbers show the truth-that the American people are not that dumb, and even if the "sheeple" wake up it won't matter a bit. Not without real leaders, real oppostion, and real access to the media that controls and frames and chooses the debate.

171. You say you're...
..."doom and gloom." I say you're somebody who, rather than take refuge in denial, chooses to face the reality of our situation. You've called it the way it is. It's tough to come to grips with--too tough for some, but it IS the reality of what we're faced with. I trust, however, that you're message is not to throw in the towel. We certainly need to keep trying, any way we can, to take our country back. Personally, I can't see it happening without a revolution. This crooked regime is already too well entrenched, and as you say, they control the ballot box. How can we overcome that without a revolution?
