Survey Ranks Wisconsin School Tops in Drinking

The University of Wisconsin-Madison topped a list of the nation's best party schools released Monday, despite a decade-long effort by the school to reduce its reputation for heavy drinking.

Meanwhile, Brigham Young University led "stone cold sober" schools for the eighth straight year.

The rankings are based on survey responses regarding alcohol and drug use, hours of study each day, and the number of students in fraternities and sororities.

Schools often criticize the list, while the American Medical Association has urged Princeton Review to stop putting it out, saying it legitimizes students' drinking.

15. Utah has no bars.
At least it didn't last time I was there. You can get drinks with a meal at a restaurant, but watering holes that are common in the rest of the US don't exist in Utah.

18. Ah, the place of my birth is number one in something at least!
Attended UW - River Falls (another pretty big party school, sort of a scaled down UW-Madison) but went to many memorable parties at UW-Madison as well. I remember one football game where the opposing cheeleaders kidnapped Bucky Badger (the mascot), spread eagled him and ran him full speed into one of the goal posts (fortunately padded). That had to hurt :o , but it was funny as hell to all the drunks (including me) in the stands.

17. UW Madison is ALWAYS it the top 5
year after year. But most still get their work done.

"The chairman of the campus student government, though, said many students would take pride in the ranking considering the university's other reputation as a top academic institution.

U.S. News and World Report ranked UW-Madison No. 34 among national universities in its annual survey last week."

It is also considered the Berkley of the Midwest.

Arizona State, West Virginia University and University of Colorado Boulder have all been on the list in the past several years, and nothing good has ever come of it.

When I was there, the drinking age was just raised from 19 to 21, but it didn't put much of a dent in things.
