Is Blair Off to Join $30Bn World Elite?
http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/news/fullnewsbottom/tm_objectid=15880889&method=full&siteid=106694-name_page.html

Tony Blair is expected to join one of the most exclusive groups of businessmen in the world after he leaves Downing Street.

The PM is being lined up for a highly lucrative position with the Carlyle Group - an American-based investment giant with strong links to the White House and the defence industry.

The firm has been nicknamed "The Ex-Presidents Club" because it has had a host of former world leaders on its books including George Bush Senior, his former secretary of state James Baker and former British PM John Major. There a also a large number of former US Army top brass.

Mr Blair has been keeping quiet about his plans after his departure from Number 10 - which could be as early as 2007 according to some Labour insiders.

23. Hey, didn't we call this one? WAY back when?
That Blair was angling for the Carlyle Group, or that he was going to be promised a nice, cushy seat on their board of directors with all the perks and benefits and goodies that entailed? Didn't we call this one! (Answer: YES, OF COURSE WE DID. One of MANY predictable things about this bunch of criminals.)

5. Dunno if it's any elite
Canada has a former premier in there, now an ambassador, and he had no clout at all.

Tony could have done this years ago though, if he'd wanted to.

has to be kidding, right?

"tony" cd have donned a kilt & applied for membership in the Blackstone Rangers, too, but that's not what he did; he sucked up to the neocons & got his 30 pieces of silver for it.

26. No I just meant
that he's long since been elegible to join Carlyle. At the end of his first term if he wished to. It was discussed many times on DU. He didn't need to go into Iraq in order to 'qualify.' One of our premiers is a member, and didn't do anything outstanding to gain entry.

Why Tony went to Iraq is still a mystery.

The longer one works in politics, the more connections one has.

It may be a mistery to you why Blair went along with Bush.

33. There has been lots of
speculation over Tony's motives, from the UK still owing money from WWII, to Bush having a 'compromising' photo of Blair. :7

We may never know why for sure, but a simple position at Carlyle doesn't seem likely enough bait, since that was in the bag anyway.

As a result, Blair was rewarded for his loyalty to the Bush regime.

28. Ya know, I remember speculation on DU that this would happen
in exchange for his taking Britain to war in Iraq. At the time, I thought those posters were just crackpots....I mean, I mean, who in their right mind would suggest that a prime minister of Britain could be bribed by a huge salary and perqs to take his country to war?!?!

I mean, right? That's just crazy!!!

I humbly apologize to those who made that suggestion. They were prescient, they were skeptical, they were right, I was wrong.

41. What shocks me is that greed, not concern, drives their decisions
Edited on Tue Aug-23-05 11:32 AM by WhoWantsToBeOccupied
In theory, a bunch of ridiculously rich people deciding the fate of the Earth could do much good. Their wealth could insulate them from making self-serving decisions and drive them to instead care about, for example, the continued EXISTENCE of the planet and its ability to sustain life.

But wealth obviously doesn't give one foresight or free one from the clutches of greed.

People absurdly rich and scheming to control our planet care only about their own short-term self-interest because that's how they became absurdly rich and able to scheme to control our planet.

Dictatorships are seldom benign. Something about the corrupting power of absolute power.
