WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites)'s grandfather was a director of a bank seized by the federal government because of its ties to a German industrialist who helped bankroll Adolf Hitler's rise to power, government documents show.



Prescott Bush was one of seven directors of Union Banking Corp., a New York investment bank owned by a bank controlled by the Thyssen family, according to recently declassified National Archives documents reviewed by The Associated Press.


Fritz Thyssen was an early financial supporter of Hitler, whose Nazi party Thyssen believed was preferable to communism. The documents do not show any evidence Bush directly aided that effort. His position with Union Banking never was a political issue for Bush, who was elected to the Senate from Connecticut in 1952.

A few months ago, I went digging and found out a lot about the Farish family -- none of it reassuring.

In 1942, Farish was the president of Standard Oil of New Jersey, which had not only continued doing business with Germany after the entry of the U.S. into World War II, but had also provided certain patents for artificial rubber to the Nazis while hiding them from the U.S. government.

Farish's wife was connected with several prominent Houston families -- her mother was a Botts (as in Baker and Botts) and her father was a Rice (as in Rice University.) Farish's grandson, William Stamps Farish III, is currently married to a DuPont heiress, great-niece of the DuPonts who tried to overthrow FDR in 1934. He is one of George H.W. Bush's closest friends and is the current U.S. ambassador to Great Britain. He's extremely rich and extraordinarily secretive and has been so nearly invisible as ambassador that the British are wondering what he's doing there at all.

Excuse me for going off on a rant like this -- but I'm growing increasingly convinced that we delude ourselves if we think that people like the BFEE believe in the same consensus reality as the rest of us and are merely acting out of self-interest. If we want to understand what is going on in the world today, we have to bring to light their real belief system, in all its nutty glory. What happened in the 1930s and 1940s is a vital key to that belief system, because many aspects of it were stated openly then that have been concealed and disguised ever since. That is why exposes of W's grandfather are significant -- not because W may or may not be tainted by things that happened before he was born, but because the underlying attitudes live on.
