Habib (former Gitmo detainee) stabbed near his home

Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib has been stabbed near his Sydney home.

Mr Habib was walking home with his wife Maha at Guildford early on Monday morning when he was bashed on the head from behind and stabbed in the stomach, the Seven Network reported tonight.

Mr Habib, who was not seriously injured, believed he was targeted.

Lifting his top to show a 6cm cut over his stomach, Mr Habib said he thought a man had come at him from the front with a knife.

"He tried to stab me so many times and he keep going ... he got me in my left side," he told Seven.

Mrs Habib said she believed there were three men dressed in black with hoods covering their heads.

"They said something like 'Ah, that should keep you quiet'. What's meant by that?" she said.

Mr Habib told the network the men could have murdered him but he believed they wanted only to menace him.

"They hit me in my head from the back. If you want to kill me you can hit me from the back with knife, hit me in my kidney with knife and that's it, finish," he said.

"Police are investigating an assault against the former Guantanamo Bay prisoner Mamdouh Habib, who says he was hit from behind and attacked with a knife by three men near his home in Guildford early on Monday.
In a statement to police, Mr Habib described being followed by a car that cut its headlights as he and his wife, Maha, went for a walk just after midnight.

"I was struck to the back of the head from someone behind me," he said. "I'm not sure what I was struck with but I don't think it was a fist.

"I turned around and pushed my wife away to protect her. I saw a male facing me with a knife in his hand."
Mr Habib said that one man lunged at him several times with the knife and he received a shallow cut in his stomach.

Mrs Habib said that as the men ran away the man holding the knife had yelled "something like 'this should keep you quiet"'.

Her husband said the three men were dressed in jumpers or jackets with hoods pulled over their heads and also wore caps.
