BEIRUT, Lebanon - Experts inspected the debris Tuesday of an overnight bombing that wounded five people and an investigating magistrate said the attack resembled a series of explosions in Lebanon's capital this year.
Monday night's bomb in the Zalka neighborhood of north Beirut was of similar weight — 44 to 66 pounds of TNT — to the earlier bombs, said military court magistrate Jean Fahd. It was planted in a commercial area, and blew out the windows of a tourist hotel and nearby shops in a Christian district of Beirut.
"The aim of all these explosions appears to be to sow fear and terror in the hearts of citizens and cause as much material damage as possible to destabilize security and harm the tourist season," Fahd said.
President Emile Lahoud and Prime Minister Fuad Saniora condemned the blast, with Saniora saying the government would "spare no effort to arrest the criminals responsible for these ugly crimes."
