Officials hint at U.S.-Can trade war
Officials hint at U.S.-Can trade war
On U.S. in escalating softwood lumber dispute

REGINA -- The federal government hinted at an escalating trade war Tuesday as two senior cabinet ministers warned of potential tariffs on American exports in retaliation for U.S. policies on softwood lumber.

Trade Minister Jim Peterson is identifying areas where Canadian tariffs could put maximum pressure on the U.S. economy with minimal damage domestically, two of his cabinet colleagues said.

Emerson said Ottawa is trying to ''identify a number of products where a tariff on American exports into Canada can be applied without serious damage to the Canadian economy and, hopefully, with maximum impact in the U.S. . .

''The idea is a wakeup call (to the U.S.)''

8. the White House doesn't need renovation that badly
Its current denizens merely need to be prosecuted for their crimes.

I'm sure Canada would be glad to see another Gen. Robert Ross in action, along with many other countries.

11. Ho Ho Ho
Christmas came early this year to the Corporations and the premiers.

Canada backs down on trade retaliation

It could be well into 2007 before the federal government applies retaliatory tariffs in the softwood lumber dispute, Trade Minister Jim Peterson said Tuesday.

Despite heightened rhetoric earlier in the day by high-ranking cabinet officials and the Prime Minister, Mr. Peterson said Canada would wait until after it received WTO approval and performed extensive consultation with Canadians before retaliatory tariffs would be considered in the softwood lumber dispute.

But the United States said that it had no intention of scrapping the duty on Canadian softwood. Washington says it found further evidence for the softwood duties in November, 2004, and that last week's decision only applies to the U.S. International Trade Commission's 2002 finding of injury.

Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew appeared to welcome the idea of tariffs and admitted California wines were being considered as one possible target.

5. Freedom will be on the march because we don't have enough
oil to drive up there. And now is the time - pull some troops out of Iraq and send them to Canada in November - yeah they are going to love the cool breezes in Edmonton.

We've been screwing with Canadian lumber imports ever since Bush was selected.

17. And when our government imposes retaliatory duties on imports..
that money will go to social programs or paying down the debt.

In the USA - all the retaliatory (in the case of softwood phony issue) duties go to the corporations. Why? Because Bush cannot bankrupt the government and 'starve the beast' fast enough.
