Bush's "spirit" cursed with black magic, tossed into Thai river
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20031018/od_afp/apec_thailand_us_offbeat_031018063156

BANGKOK (AFP) - US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) has been trapped in a clay pot and tossed into a river in northern Thailand -- or at least his spirit has after being cursed by hundreds of farmers protesting US agriculture policy.

A photograph of the US leader was sealed inside a pot amid black magic mantra chants, then tossed into the Ping River Friday by demonstrators after they rallied at the US consulate in Chiang Mai, a farm group leader said.

"This is a traditional northern Thai ceremony aimed at keeping his spirit down on the riverbed so he could not come and exploit our natural resources or suppress our (farming) brothers with his superior influence," Weerasak Wan-ubol, an executive of the Northern Farmers Alliance, told AFP Saturday.

The 300 protesters, claiming to represent 20,000 members from seven northern provinces, railed against imminent plans for a free-trade agreement between Thailand and the United States.

5. "Spirit in a Pot"
"This is a traditional northern Thai ceremony aimed at keeping his spirit down on the riverbed so he could not come and exploit our natural resources or suppress our (farming) brothers with his superior influence,"

Hmmm....they actually acknowledge his "superior influence" but claim their "black magic mantra chants" will keep Bush's spirit trapped in a clay pot. Yeah, that will "do it" for sure.

Why doesn't their black magic lift them out of their poverty? Time to find a greater power..........

42. "their poverty"
Define "poverty."

Do you think those silly farmers just don't KNOW they have to be able to use their American Express at Walmart to be truly rich by our standards?

Amazing.

56. Many cultures...
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 10:31 AM by liberalmuse
do not believe they live in 'poverty'. They don't define their worth or happiness with how much material resources they have, like we do here in America. In fact, some of the most 'impoverished' tribes/villages have the most content and happy people on earth. They see Americans and wonder why we rarely smile. I guess we shouldn't try to define other cultures using our limited worldviews, huh? To many of these same cultures, the American way of life is considered soulless.

58. You do realize that the purpose of most religions
is not to increase ones net worth, don't you? Equating a persons poverty with the need to find a greater power seems a bit hypocritical for a christian doesn't it? Of course much American Christianity should properly be called Mammonism. Who do you serve?

69. have you ever been to Thailand?
Or are you just assuming the people there live in poverty? Thailand is not a third world country.

also, I'm pretty sure the "black magic" bit was added on by whoever wrote the article. No Thai would ever refer to a Buddhist mantra as "black magic".

I've never been to Thailand (it's high on my wish list) but lived in a neighborhood with a lot of Thai grad students here in SC. They were some of the best neighbors I could ever wish for. They were all some of the most friendly, happy people I have ever met, with a wonderful sense of humor.

I suspect that this was a very well chosen use of an old cultural tradition to gather media attention to their protest. How many protests of only 300 people gain international attention?

It is a shame that the reporter used the term "black magic". I remember some freeper types burning Clinton in effigy. Why was that not called "black magic"? Certainly the roots of that action were culturally closer to black magic than those of the Thai farmers.

I also suspect that the "superior influence" is a mistranslation. The word superior in context would seem to mean that they are working to counteract *s overwhelming power - a reasonable statement given the horrifying forces that * controls. :scared:

Here is a pic from another Thai protest in Bangkok.

Buddhist monks gather at Lumpini Park in Bangkok, Thailand, Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, during a protest rally against U.S. President George W. Bush (news - web sites) and U.S. government policies. It's one of my favorite places in the whole world. It's funny, back when Clinton was president, once the taxi drivers found out you were American, they'd say "Clinton!" and give you a big thumbs up. The guy was really liked over there. The two times I've been since Bush got in office, that only happened once, and we quickly set the taxi driver straight about our feelings toward The Chimp.

Or are you just being nasty because the subject of "Christian apologetics" gets on your nerves??

32. Defending Western Culture
"How do you defend Western culture?"

Very easily:

"new, adventure, suprise; unique, individual, person, vocation; time, history, future (vs. "fate"); freedom, progress, spirit; faith, hope, justice" Let's add medicine medicine, education, and a purpose in life to the list. That's why I defend western civilization.

I perceive from the tone of your comments that you might believe that I believe that a defense of "western culture" is a defense of all "westerners" or the things they have done. No. It's a defense of the IDEAS which are embodied in the above list. Remember, ideas have consequences. For example, if you believe that a group of people is inferior to your group of people (an idea), you WILL treat them accordingly (the consequence, and look no further than the last century). If you believe that women are inferior (an idea), you WILL treat them poorly (the consequence). And, as someone has said, EVERY culture will ultimately be judged on how it treated people. Some cultures eat people (do you have a personal preference?) Some cultures murder women (the consequence) because they were raped (the idea: the woman has disgraced her family!) (Kayell, do you have a personal preference on this one? I do.) Many cultures throw baby girls into the river (the consequence)because they deem boys to be superior and, therefore, more desirable (the idea). (By the way, what's your personal preference on this one, Kayell?)

Ideas have consequences.

Read Thomas Cahill's "The Gifts of the Jews: How a Tribe of Desert Nomads Changed the Way Everyone Thinks and Feels" (provocative title, isn't it?). Although I don't agree with everything he writes, I think you'll have a better idea of where I'm coming from if you're open to reading it. (I'm assuming you're tolerant and openminded enough to do so.) So, what exactly are the gifts of the Jews? In a nutshell, the above ideas, which form the basis of western civilization.

Cahill also wrote "How the Irish Saved Civilization".......don't ya just love those titles!!

Ideas have consequences. Kayell, I know that you are, at this very moment in time and space, benefiting from the contributions of western culture. I'm assuming that you are a unique, one-of-a-kind individual, that you have a vocation, and that you want a future and a purpose in life; that you have benefited in some way from modern medicine; that you are educated and that you are free to pursue what makes you happy. I also know that you deeply desire justice (and mercy), too.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Your hobby lists "defending western civilization". I didn't ask you to defend it, but how you go about defending it. What does that involve?

Neo-cons are neo-conservatives. Here is a bit of a definition - http://blogs.salon.com/0002379/2003/06/20.html I don't assume that you are a neo-con, I don't assume that you aren't. I'm sure that you have read the DU rules, no? http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules.html The comment wasn't about you, but about what I think is the only major current danger to Western civilization.

I'm curious about why you think that western civilization may or may not be ticking along just fine. What do you see as the potential difficulties?

Action is anything you do. Do you write, paint, demonstrate, call your congressman, post on message boards, volunteer at museums....?

Added: Oh, and I wasn't just waiting for your answer. I was off fixing at eating breakfast, as I said that I would be. When I returned 45 minutes later, I was surprised that you had not responded yet, considering how quick you were with other posts.

Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 11:56 AM by kayell
It is a bedroom community suburb of DC, and has not been what could be called rural and certainly not poor for many, many years. The range of politics in that area is diverse. While it's possible there were KKK meetings there in the past, it would have to be the distant past. The area is quite integrated now, with an extremely wide range of nationalities, cultures and religions in the area. The poster is convenient to the full range of cultural offerings that the DC area provides.

Here is a link to a map of Sterling. http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&&csz=Sterling+VA+&Get%A0Map=Get+Map The gray area in the lower left corner is Dulles airport. Either you are confused with another area, or you have not been there in many years. (one slight caveat - there are a few oddly rural pockets trapped behind Dulles. I have not noticed the people I knew that lived there to be uniformly uneducated or rightwing. And by the way, rural or southern does not doom one to be a bigot, a born again, a neo-con, or etc.)

BTW, I'm neither "rural" nor "southern", unless by "rural" you mean small-town Minnesota.

And yes, there are lots of cultural events around. I've lived overseas (Io sono stata quattro anni a bella Roma; sto lavorando all'Ambiasciata Americana. Auch in Oesterreich fur drei jaren). Gee, I haven't spoken Italian since 1986. I surprise even myself!!

Favorite movie: Jean Cocteau's "La Belle et la Bete" (1946)
Favorite ballet: Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" (I love the Russian composers)
Favorite duo: Steely Dan
Favorite line in a movie: "Faith is not a floor plan" ("Simon Birch")
Currently reading: "Seabiscuit" and "Under the Tuscan Sun"
Favorite painter: Vermeer
Married: to a wonderful man, former Navy SEAL and Seabee, and Native American (3/4 Apache). Met him in Russia

Just as being rural and southern does not mean that one is conservative or bigoted, being northern, well educated and well traveled does not mean that a person is not any of the above.

97. Sterling VA in Loudon County is predominantly WHITE (links)
Edited on Sun Oct-19-03 12:08 AM by amen1234
here' the link to U.S.Census figures from 2000
http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/BasicFactsTable?_lang=en&_vt_name=DEC_2000_PL_U_GCTPL_ST7&_geo_id=04000US51

Virginia is 20.0% Black

where I live, in Alexandria VA, the population is 22.5% Black

then you drive toward the Blue Ridge Mountains and pass the BIG billboard that says "GUNS" with a giant confederate flag, and you KNOW that you have entered 'rural' Virginia....

Sterling Virginia is located Loudon County, Virginia and has a population of 20,512 people. Although this U.S. Census table doesn't list the racial figures for Sterling VA, the area can be understood by reviewing the Loudon County figures that are listed:

Hamilton Town, Loudon County is 1.4% Black
Lovettsville Town, Loudon County is 2.4 % Black
Round Hill Town, Loudon County is 7.2 % Black
Leesburg Town, Loudon County is 9.2 % Black

the drive is not too far from where I live, (Alexandria, Virginia 22.5% Black) but the change in Black population is stunning and is created by the constant vigilance of radical fundamentalist churches and clubs and private schools that harrass and threaten Black people with their constant display of conferate flags and just in the last two years that I have lived here....TWO burning of crosses on Black people's lawns...

BTW, I don't think it's particularly prosperous to live at the end of the Dulles Airport runways, where Sterling Virginia is located. Keeping the area economically viable are the big Dulles Airport hotels, with service jobs. There is a 20 % drop in per capita income in the 25 miles between my location and Sterling Virginia. It is well known that Virginia flug itself backwards by starting a Civil War, and has remained poor due to it's scary continuation of terrorism...Jerry Falwell is major here, Rush is on the radio streaming hate still (replays)...Virginia is a major bastion of angry white men prominently displaying confederate flags and spewing fundamentalist terrorism in the name of God....I just got an ad in the mail inviting me to Free Admission 'The Real Homeland Security Family Life Bible Series' (What is America's Destiny? Find answers through bible prophecy)...it's the ultimate terrorist location in the USA, the home of the pentagoon....

100. Come on, I know the area too
Edited on Sun Oct-19-03 08:18 AM by kayell
Alexandria is a very nice place, I lived there when I was REALLY young. It's a lovely place to wander in and to live no doubt if you can afford it.

The towns you list are mostly on the west of Loudoun County, except for Leesburg, in the middle. Yes, as you get west in the county it becomes more rural and more white, and in most towns pretty darn prosperous. Loudoun in general is a very well to do county, although probably not up to Alexandria income standards. Most people in this country can only dream of the income level there.

Yes, as you go west from DC the area becomes less diverse, but still quite diverse when judged against most areas of the country. Saying that Loudoun is predominantly white is deceptive though, since Alexandria is also predominantly white. So is most of the country.

The DC area has an extremely wide range of peoples and cultures. There is a large Islamic school in Loudoun county close to Sterling. I will admit that it was a subject of controversy before opening, instigated by racist flyers distributed by one christian school. Most Loudoun county citizens were appalled by the racist attacks and the county supervisors approved the zoning for the school.

That area is pumped full of money. If you don't think that Loudoun county and even Sterling is proseperous, please don't leave Alexandria, you'll be shocked. The small enclaves that are less proseperous that I mentioned are in the Dulles approach area. Most of Sterling is not in the approach area. The poster collects art, how many people can afford to do that?

I mentioned Dulles as a landmark for most people. Most wouldn't know where Sterling is, but Dulles is well known.

A 20% drop from the income level in Alexandria may sound a lot, but given the extremely high income required to live that close to DC, it is not that significant. Loudoun is still a very wealthy county by national standards, with a high education level. I know that it was in the top 5 counties for income within the last 10 years.

Loudoun becomes more urban every day - it's one reason I don't live there anymore - way too crowded.

I never saw the sign near the Blue Ridge (assuming that you are saying on Rt. 7), but mentioning the Blue Ridge with Sterling is also deceptive, since the Blue Ridge is on the far opposite side of a large county. I haven't seen a lot of the other racist crap you mention even in my most recent visit last winter. It is a horrid shame if there has been a cross burning in the area. Our whole country is becoming more polarized every day. I am amazed though that my relatives in the area didn't mention it. They bury me constantly in local news clippings. Perhaps you have a reference.

Classing an entire state by it's most extreme elements though is really deceptive. Yes Jerry Falwell is in Virginia, although Lynchburg is a VERY long distance from Loudoun county. Do you assume that all residents of Lynchburg are rural bigots simply because they are unfortunate enough to have that asshole for a neighbor?

So what if Rush can be heard on the radio, Rush can be heard on the radio everywhere. So what if the pentagon is in VA. It had to be somewhere. Does that make you an evil person for living even closer to the pentagon?

Sterling is easily accesible to DC. I would guess that most residents work in DC or Alexandria. There are good highways, the Metro is close.

My point though is that the poster has had more oppurtunities in Sterling and Loudoun County to interact with other cultures than most people in this country. She is also clearly well traveled, and well read. She has no excuse to think that western culture needs defending. Western culture and many other cultures are thriving together in the DC area and suburbs.

It seems classist to make a case that she is a product of a poor, rural area (especially when that isn't even true), and therefore must be bigoted. Believe it or not, some of the worst neo-con assholes are rich and well educated! Her attitudes reveal her as probably xenophobic, her church association reveals her as almost certainly homophobic. Should we say that because there is a homophobic bible church in McLean that the whole area is that way? There is a quaker meeting house in Hamilton mentioned above. Does that mean that all residents are liberal quakers?

78. Gosh, I guess we'll
just ignore the Greek view that people are the center of the universe and therefore have mastery over it, no need to live in harmony with anything, we own it. Please compare this somewhat older view with the so-called Jewish view found in Genesis, where men are given dominion over the earth.(And I do mean men, not humankind!)

And a buncha others! Creating mastery creates slaves automatically and that power differential is the engine driving Western culture! That's why so many more wars, so many more incidents of "irrational" behavior, no need to fit in!

I agree with you, Kayell. That's probably why Jesus expressed the most criticism for the religious leaders of his day. He wasn't interested in their actions (read: good works), but the motives of their hearts......he talked alot about motives, didn't he? He always got to the "heart" of the matter (no pun intended).

I usually have to figure that their actions demonstrate what their motives are.

By the way, what are your motives? It is customary before posting on a board as a new member, to lurk a while, and get the flavor of the board. If you had done so, you would know that given the difficulties people here have with hard-core fundamentalist christians, it would be considerate to explain exactly what kind of christian you are.

Defending Western civilization is often used by neo-cons as code for the worst kind of xenophobic bigotry. If that is not your intention, then you need to explain more clearly what you mean. It is disingenuous to dance around the subject on this board, after listing it in your public information.

Especially on a political board such as this one, where the rules limit membership to dems and other progressives, it is often wise to start slow and be clear in presenting ones political viewpoint. I am not at all clear about yours, would you care to enlighten us all?

You should thank me, really. Now you'll be able to go in tomorrow and tell everyone about how you were persecuted for your beliefs but remained steadfast in the face of the godless heathens, thereby adding one more piece of "evidence" that the end of the world is at hand.

But if you're hell-bent on wanting to feel defensive about your religion, I'd suggest you start a thread in General Discussion instead of hijacking the thread at hand. If your post count isn't high enough to start your own thread, let me know and I'll be glad to start it for you. Give me the thread title and the initial text and I'll be glad to get it going for you. You'll see all the action you crave to see. But be warned, several of us are well-versed in religion and could run circles around any uninformed, hapless, dogmatic soul who wishes to engage in divisiveness.

Waiting.

66. Voodoo and curses work.
The reason for this is the power of suggestion. The local witch doctor would put a curse on someone, and they would make sure the "perpetrator" would find out. Many times, the object of the curse would get sick, or die under mysterious circumstances.

So Weerasak Wan-ubol needs to send the press clipping from this article to the Bushmeister. Maybe then it will have an effect.

(one can always dream)
