Colombia lawmakers 'use cocaine'


Some of Colombia's elected politicians have used cocaine within Congress itself, the vice-president of the country's Senate has alleged.

The drug is also being sold there, Senator Edgar Artunduaga said.

"I know names of people who distribute cocaine here in Congress," he said, revealing the results of an investigation ordered by his office.

"There are important officials who distribute, and senators and representatives who consume," he said.

Lawmakers, lawyers and the like have been using cocain for while here in North America as well. One of my buddies is a lawyer, and even though a lot of them a clean, there are a fair number of them who like to sniff a line once in a while. So I'm not really surprised about this news.

Drug possession is legal in Colombia, so this is the equivalent of a senator having a bottle in his desk.

I know Colombian professionals--businessmen, lawyers, researchers--who always have some with them and use it as a "pick me up" during the day, much like we use a cup of Starbucks.

The stuff is dirt cheap there--how about $14 for an eightball? One of my Colombian friends says that with prices like that, "You don't waste your money on cocaine, just your time."
