Britain heads for clash with US
Disagreement over America's bid to derail UN reform

Britain will join an international alliance to confront George Bush and salvage as much as possible of an ambitious plan to reshape the United Nations and tackle world poverty next week .

The head-to-head in New York on Monday comes after the revelation that the US administration is proposing wholesale changes to crucial parts of the biggest overhaul of the UN since it was founded more than 50 years ago.

A draft of that plan had included a review of progress on the UN's millennium development goals - poverty eradication targets set in 2000 for completion by 2015 - and the introduction of reforms aimed at repairing the damage done to the UN's reputation by Iraq, Rwanda and the Balkans.

(snip)

The Foreign Office confirmed yesterday that Britain was standing behind the original plan, putting it at odds with Mr Bush.

The concern in British and other international circles is that the American objections, if adopted, would severely undermine the UN summit, the biggest-ever gathering of world leaders.

Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 10:17 PM by HypnoToad
How? By making us all so piss poor so we're on level ground?

Just nuke us all until we're like a marshmallow peep in a microwave and have it done...

11. unwise to ask for it
There is a very significant risk of that smackdown entailing military action against the US.

Kicking the neocons out of office is not merely a matter of morality. It's getting to the point of self-preservation. If the rest of the world doesn't bomb us to smithereens in retaliation for their idiocy, they're rather likely to start killing us outright if left unchecked.

13. I'm not convinced there will be no military reprisals
All it really takes is a large enough coalition, and Bushler has literally united the world against us. He can't carpet-nuke the entire world, even with the size of the US nuclear arsenal.

15. If he uses nukes
even tactical ones, will be another ballgame. However if he uses tactical, he would use statigic ICBMs unless the military says hell NO!
The U$ does have the advantage in ICBMs if they have been maintained.
Is BU$HCO that crazy? I hope not, I hope they are just greedy and not suicidal.

28. That's what scares me, too. He believes he's an agent of God.
And maybe he's just trying to "help" God along a little with the Apocalypse scheduling. He believes God "anointed" him. So anything he does has God's blessing behind it.

SICKO. SICK FUCK.

24. Hey - look what it too with German and Japan.
If that's what it takes, I'm all for it.

Unfortunately, we - the non-collaborators and not-guilty will suffer along side the collaborators and guilty.

If that's what it takes, I'm all for it.

I will be on the side of the resistance. Which side will YOU be on?

8. Way to go Britain!
750 changes to a 36 page draft? That's over 20 changes per page! Sounds like a complete rewrite to me.

I hope Bushco's belligerence is going to backfire this time. I have to think Britain is getting impatient with their involvement in Iraq (no end in sight) and Bush's act is wearing real thin. I also hope that other nations, especially major industrial nations, follow Britain's lead.

25. All going as planned by the administration
Look, this is the plan:

Put a bunch of outrageous changes in the document. Insist on stupid stuff that you know will never be approved. Jump up and down and pitch a hissy fit, and then finally "concede" the majority of points only if approval of a few changes are made. Those minor changes will be the major points they wanted all along.

Don't be fooled. They needed a jerk like Bolton to pull it off.
