Bush braces U.S. for sacrifice as protesters gather (Radio address)
CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President George W. Bush, assailed by sagging poll numbers and criticism from anti-war protesters camped outside his ranch, called on Saturday for Americans to show resolve and brace for additional sacrifice in Iraq.
...
In his weekly radio address, Bush acknowledged the job for U.S. soldiers was not yet done

"Our efforts in Iraq and the broader Middle East will require more time, more sacrifice and continued resolve," he said.
...
Bush praised the efforts of Iraqi leaders to agree on principles to guide their country's future, despite religious and other divisions.

"What is important is that Iraqis are now addressing these issues through debate and discussion -- not at the barrel of a gun," he said.

3. We haven't even SEEN the violence that's going to occur.
Regardless of whether we are there or not, as soon as the Shiites pass the constitution, the Sunnis will rise up in civil war. There will be genocide. It's inevitable now. We'll only be caught in the crossfire.

60. I'm right there with you...
but I was saying this before the invasion! I'm certainly no expert yet I was fully aware that the only thing keeping Iraq from splitting into total chaos was Saddam's brutal regime. Many here on DU were saying as much. Voiced by many on this site were the following:

1. We would find no WMD... This was proven when troops touched down. If Saddam had them he would have used them.

2. We wouldn't be greeted as liberators. The real test for the troops would come AFTER Saddams forces were defeated, and guerrilla tactics would be used.

3. The war would only create more terrorists. Now its the best training ground that could be asked for.

4. Iraqis would choose and Islamic republic over a western style democracy.

5. Iraq would plummet into civil war as the various factions would be incapable of any kind of cooperation. Our forces would be stuck in the middle.

So far the members of DU score much better than Nostradamus! And they seem to have more sense than anyone in the Bush administration. But that shouldn't surprise anyone here.

7. What have YOU sacrificed, george?
Other than your ratings which are sinking like a stone to the bottom of the ocean. But, wait. That's no sacrifice at all, that's a consequence. You may finally learn what a consequence is, after all these years.

Stop mouthing off about sacrifice when you don't even know the meaning of the word. Go talk to Cindy Sheehan. She'll explain it to you.

13. I noticed that 'in the broader ME" insertion also.

......Bush, who personally intervened this week with a key Shi'ite leader in a bid to broker a deal on Iraq's constitution, said Iraqis were "making the tough choices and compromises necessary for a free and peaceful future."

With almost 1,900 U.S. troops dead in the Iraq conflict, Bush is under mounting pressure from critics to finish training a new Iraqi security force and bring the soldiers home.

Bush supporters and anti-war protesters, including relatives of soldiers who died in Iraq, were slated to face off this weekend with rallies near the president's 1,600-acre (648-hectare) Crawford ranch, where he has been spending much of August on vacation.

Cindy Sheehan, whose son died in Iraq in April 2004, has been holding a vigil outside the ranch seeking another meeting with him to press for the quick withdrawal of U.S. troops. She will be countered by other soldiers' families who back the U.S. action in Iraq.

20. Oh, but he blames 9-11 for the change of heart on nation-building
It's a different world since 9-11 to him.

Clinton's "nation-building" was simply "charity" and the US butting it's nose into other nation's business. It had nothing to do with US interests and security. (Shows what little understanding the fool had on global issues.)

Bush STILL gets it wrong - to him nation building is US hegemony, with us or against us, my way or the highway. Spreading democracy around the globe. Sheesh, look at what Bolton just did to the UN - 750 amendments, demanding changes, and wanting all the focus of the UN on the war against terrorism and spreading democracy.

Bush's idea of protecting the US and her interests is to install a gov't of his choosing and supporting that gov't come hell or high water. It's that feeble minded thinking that is going to take us into a deeper and wider cluster-fuck in the "broader ME".

Meanwhile he's gone on a "nation-building" kick in Afghanistan, Iraq, Uzbekistan (to protect against the Taliban) and Haiti for starters.

The only foreign policy in protecting US interest the idiot seems to know is military might and war. The US interests he wants to protect are oil, US economic dominance and her world reserve currency status. Can WWIII be far behind?

12. In other AP coverage: In radio address "Bush showed only confidence..."
snip>
In his radio address, Bush showed only confidence that the problems would be overcome, saying a new democratic constitution "will be a landmark event" in the Mideast.

"Like our own nation's founders over two centuries ago, the Iraqis are grappling with difficult issues, such as the role of the federal government," he said. "What is important is that Iraqis are now addressing these issues through debate and discussion _ not at the barrel of a gun."

22. Only confidence?
I wonder. As the pressure starts to mount for Bush, he and his advisors huddle several times a day to try to figure out their next move.

There are beads of sweat on their foreheads as they try to decide what to do. Iraq is the "Theater" as they call it, and the U.S. is the place that will decide where events go from here.

Crawford, specifically. Bush knows that the American public is reaching the end of its tolerance. Cindy Sheehan is a lightning rod for peoples' disgust and anger.

The advisors have big sweat stains under their arms, because they are under incredible pressure to show some progress over there. A constitution would help. Unfortunately, nothing is coming together. Just a bunch of cancellations.

Bush desperately needs the American public to hang in there, for quite a bit longer. He needs kids to continue fighting his war.

So he tries his best to "cheerlead" the masses. His voice wavers, he stumbles on the words in his pre-written script.

The fundamental problem is, if you cannot inspire your people, you will not lead them. How can you ask them to sacrifice, if you've never had to sacrifice yourself?

Confident?

Mr Bush! Tell me how "Mission Accomplished" and "Bring them on" fits into the current strategy. You have assured us time and again this was going to be easy. A cakewalk, a pushouver, a slam dunk.
Now you want more time? Why didn't you give the UN inspectors more time? You wnat more sacrifice? How many more do you think have to die? Will any be related to you? You want continued resolve? We should throw good money after bad? This deal stinks, you know it stinks and we tried to tell you it stunk 3 years ago. Stop with the lies and stop with the bullshit. Jsut stop. You uncorked the bottle when you got rid of Saddam. You changed the dynamic forever in that whole area. No way is that country going to turn into a mini-America, what the hell are you guys thinking?

47. Bush Calls for Patience on Iraq Mission
CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush on Saturday asked Americans to be patient with the U.S. military mission in Iraq, a request issued as less than half of those polled supported his war policy and thousands of pro-Bush and anti-war demonstrators competed for attention in his tiny hometown.

"Iraqis are working together to build a free nation that contributes to peace and stability in the region, and we will help them succeed," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

He gave no sign of dismay at serious snags in Iraq's democratic process.

In Baghdad, majority Shiites and minority Sunni Arabs remained at odds over the draft constitution. The Shiite-dominated constitution committee planned to submit an amended draft to Iraq's parliament this weekend. Sunnis, unimpressed with a compromise offer, submitted counterproposals and planned to meet with the U.S. ambassador.

One Sunni negotiator, Saleh al-Mutlaq, called on Iraqis to reject the draft constitution in an Oct. 15 referendum.

In his radio address, Bush showed only confidence that the problems would be overcome, saying a new democratic constitution "will be a landmark event" in the Mideast.

He will be forced to stage a second 911 to boost his ratings and show the sheeple that we really are in danger and that the war protesters are just a bunch of left winged whackos.

Maybe he won't be above suspicion the next time.

59. The only folks 'sacrificing' are troops families, Iraqi civilians,
average American taxpayers (as the wealthy and corporations have been given a pass by Bush), and their children.

While Halliburton, the Carlyle Group, KBR, and corrupt government officials rake in the dough.

Makes me sick!
