Canada, U.S. wage war of words over lumber
Prime Minister Paul Martin defended the strong positions his senior cabinet ministers took Friday in the escalating softwood lumber trade dispute with the United States.

Dialogue over softwood lumber between the countries turned downright frosty when the new U.S. ambassador to Canada, David Wilkins, urged politicians here to stop their "emotional tirades" on the issue and get back to the negotiating table.

In a meeting with the Ottawa Citizen's editorial board, Wilkins said Canadian politicians need to tone down the tough rhetoric, saying "emotional press conferences are not going to settle the issue."

snip

"Are we going to stand together? Are we going to unite?" Emerson told reporters. "Are we going to be stronger than the sum of our parts, or are we going to endlessly be bickering amongst ourselves and allow the bully to basically mop the floor with us?"

(It looks like the new U.S. Ambassador to Canada is a clone of the disasterous former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, Celluci.)

1. If Canada put up a huge metal barrier from Maine to Washington...
I couldn't blame them! They're much more tolerant of their nutty neighbor than I would be.

4. The softwood lumber deal has been decided in Canada's favour by the
Nafta arbitration committee (not to mention other decisions previously)! The thing is, the U.S.A won't accept the decision AGAIN!....I'm sick of these ambassadors (remember Celucci?) coming up here and telling us how to act!

34. Search "Canada" by keyword on FR and feel the hate.
I'm not sure why there is this feeling. Surely, our intelligent decision to stay out of the Iraq mess can't be totally responsible.

Our governement was following the wishes of the bulk of the population, you know, democracy.

6. Related item in Saturday's NYT
It's basically saying the US (and it's citizens!) should really be paying more attention to economic relations with Canada, 'cause Canada has what the US needs. Oil. (Duh!)

last paragraph:

Mr. Camarta (head of Shell Canada's oil sands operations in N. Alberta) told (the writer) that Vice President Dick Cheney would visit the oil sands next month. Memo to Mr. Cheney: Can you settle the softwood lumber dispute while you're there? With all that oil, do we really want Canada mad at us?

7. Oh, the Freepers think we can just invade anyone
and take over. . .even if they won't volunteer for a simple "freedom-loving" long-term excursion into Iraq.

They might be quite surprised how resisting Canadians are to their bullying. . .maybe the Canadians should offer a military base near the U.S. border to the Chinese and Russians - then Bush will get the message.

9. Canada provides 8% of our oil, but 18% of our natural gas.
If Canada wanted to be mean, they would shut off their natural gas exports to the U.S.

10. That's now. Just wait.
The NYC article makes two important points:

1: Canada's oil sands reserves are HUGE, rivalling Saudia Arabia's crude reserves.

2: Saudi production is reaching "the point of diminishing returns", while Canada's potential has barely been tapped.

Cheney had better be on his best behavior when he visits what could evolve into a top US energy source, for crude as well as natural gas.

That would not be a good thing to turn to oil sands.

32. At 60+ dollars a barrel it is considered cost effective enough to
make it worthwhile to 'mine' the oil, so sayeth Shell, Exxon, etc. Seeing as the oil sands are in Alberta, Texas of the north, the environment isn't Ralphie's 1st or even 2nd priority.

a hypocrite. There opposition are not aloud to have feelings but every single one of the freepers has gut wrenching feelings on whether michael & bob, or Sheila & Victoria (who the freeper has never met) can get married.

Hypocrites! As soon as they open their mouths it is:

"

One set of rules for them...on set for rules for their opposition

".

Makes me want to scream. Idiot. Asshole. Patsy. Mothball. Jerk. Freeper. Turd-possie. Ass-puppet. Go home!

Your practice of ignoring court decisions on this issue puts many of our families out of work and into poverty. And all because we have a greater supply of trees than you do. And you can't handle trade law when it is not in your favor.

I hope we hit back on corn. Perhaps the people who don't work in lumber anymore can get land and grow corn.
