EU quotas criticized as garments pile up

A quota on garment imports from China, stockpiles of clothes at European ports and a vacationing EU trade commissioner has coalesced into crisis mode.

Eighty million garments are currently impounded in ports across European Union countries due to the quotas, which were decided on in Brussels in June, the Sunday Times of London said.

In mid-July, European Union quotas on clothing imports went into effect. However, because many orders are placed nine months in advance, the garments piled up.

Said a spokesman for the European Association of National Organizations of Textile Retailers: You can't change the rules during the game and this is what happened. The commission should have paid more attention.
