U.S. Training To Stop London-Style Attack

(AP) With the Pentagon still in flames from the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, Shawn Kelley arrived to survey a surreal scene: mangled metal, charred ruins and firefighters hosing the smoky roof, crawling over rubble, searching for survivors.

Kelley had come to the Pentagon to help deal with a terrorist strike on America. Four years later, he's working to prevent one.

"It's not 'if' it's going to happen," he says. "It's 'when' it's going to happen."

....

"My belief is when al-Qaida is ready to target something, it'll be on their timeline and not on anybody else's," says Sgt. Al Doane of the Sarasota County, Fla., sheriff's department, a recent student at the New Mexico suicide bombing course. "They might be waiting until we're completely relaxed or perhaps they're not ready."

2. You got that right. . .
these are terrorism hustlers, set to make a buck, not make anyone safe. When and if another attack takes place, they'll fall back on their standard disclaimer, "No one could stop it, you know, especially against such determined terrorists."

4. Wait a second
I lived in Arlington County, Va. for 15 years. It's a very BLUE county. It was a 9/11 target (the Pentagon). It includes no fewer than 3 very busy, and in my opinion, very vulnerable subway (Metro) lines.

The Pentagon attack shook my home. My wife and I choked on the smoke (yeah, I was that close). To Arlington residents, the threat of terrorism is no rightwing boogeyman.

Accusing anyone in the Arlington County fire department of being part of some cheapjack anti-terror scam without offering any evidence to prove it is total bullshit. Go to your room.

5. Sure thing, a fire department guy ought to be the point man
when it comes to predicting the next attack. I'm sure he doesn't have any interest at all in homeland security money.

6. So?
Show me where Mr. Kelly is getting rich off Homeland Security money. Show me why his job in Arlington County, Va., a genuine terror target, makes his participation in anti-terror activities irrelevant?

7. I think he's right
And the gibbering idiots who repeat the talking point that the American mainland hasn't been hit since September 11 and lamely attributing it to Stupidhead's leadership will shift their jabber without missing a beat because they know it's a crock, too.

We'll for sure be hit by terrorists on their timeline, not ours, and we've wasted four years in doing what we can to overcome terrorism: Building good, lasting international relationships and rallying the support of all like-minded persons and nations around the globe. Instead, we've lashed and thrashed all over the world like a particularly petulant five-year-old so much so that a lot of people who would ordinarily support the U.S. and help us out now wouldn't mind seeing us knocked down a peg or two.

8. "Allah wills it"
I hate this "not if but when" bullshit. It's exactly the same sort of cop-out the Arab world spouts: Allah wills it; it cannot be helped. Both statements presuppose an intractable problem, but the problem is only intractable because of the bull-headed intransigence of people more willing to fight for revenge than to fight for peace.

It wouldn't have to be a matter of when if the United States conducted itself honorably in the Middle East, which historically it has yet to do. Similarly, if the Arab people could get out from underneath the Koran they might escape the internecine tribal warfare and fatalistic outlook which has continually kept them divided and powerless.

But instead they are like two drunken assholes in a bar fight, neither able to really hurt the other, neither able to simply walk away.

9. You seemed to have missed a crucial point...
Let me preface this with thit tidbit.

I've been to WMD training courses and what he says is true. It s a matter of WHEN not if.

This underscores the stupidity of Bush's defense of invading Iraq: It's better to fight them over there than over here.

There was a line of thought shortly after 9/11 that Al Qaeda shot their wad on that one and got lucky. It was believed another atack like that would be years in the planning.

it's been 4 yesrs and they attacked London..who is next?
It is not if, it is WHEN.
